I am told that in Ely Cathedral there is a memorial to those who died in the First World War, or perhaps just a memorail to the Bedfordshire Regiment, and that the following is named there:
70126 William Folkard GREEN
He is supposed to have been in the Bedfordshire Regiment and died from gas at Beaumont Hamel in November 1917. I am told that his name was seen on a memorial in the Cathedral in 1974. As I cannot find his name on any of the usual databases I would be most grateful if anyone who lives in the area could confirm that he is indeed commemorated there and note any details given. I don't understand why the Bedfordshire Regiment should be commemorated in Cambridgeshire but I am assured that is the case. Any help gratefully received.

There is certainly a memorial to the men of the Suffolk regiment who died in WW1 in Ely Cathedral. Cambridgeshireshire didn't have a regular regiment so many men from there joined the Suffolks-they may well have joined the Bedfordshire Regiment too if they came from that side of the county.

Imber, Was in Ely last Wednesday, but too late to get in the Cathedral, which was closed. However I passed on the details of your man to a resident of Ely, who passed it on to a friend who will have a look at the memorial on Sunday, all being well... Regards, keith
