Christmas and New Year Marriage Dates
« on: Saturday 22 January 05 09:43 UTC (UK) »

The only two marriage certs I've sent for (up to now!) have shown dates of mariage of 25 December 1866 and 1 January 1876.
From this distance, it seems a bit well, if not wierd, then unusual.  Was it more common to get married on Christmas Day and New Years Day or is this just a coi-incidence?

Maybe my ancestors were true romantics  Cry Pass me a hanky someone...

I have several where the dates are 31st December and 1st January .... none for Christmas day though ..... which has probably more to do with the  approach that the Churches in Scotland took towards Christmas.

I'ts hugely common Paul and not really surprising when you remember they didn't tend to get weekends off plus 5 weeks paid holiday Smiley

I've been told before that some clergy offered reduced marriage fees on Christmas Day, but I think the simple answer is that it was one of the few days of the year when they would have been free to celebrate with family.

Yes, I agree with Heather - they were working the rest of the time!

Of my 4 sets of gt grandparents:

25 Dec - the groom was a fishmonger and the bride in service

26 Dec - the groom was a Gypsy

No marriage

Sep - the groom was a regular soldier

Thanks for these posts - the fact that these would be one of the few public holidays did cross my mind.

Wouldn't have liked to have been a vicar in those days - mustn't have left them much time for the Turkey and Pudd! Smiley

A great-aunt of mine was married on Christmas Day 1924 and my grandparents married on Boxing Day in 1926.  I was told it was because they were already having a big do for Christmas and by having the wedding at the same time, double expense was avoided when money was tight in the first place.
