Trade Directories
« on: Monday 23 June 08 05:10 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know if there is  trade directory issued between 1915 and 1918. I am looking for the name of a resident in Church Street, Hulme. near Manchester  (I have searched the Historical Directories to 1911 and also the 1929.)

I would be very pleased to hear from you if you can help me.
Thank you
Pat

If you give me a name & what trade did,  i will look at the 1913 and also the Absent voters list for 1918 for you. They may pop up on them for you?

Dear Migky

That is so kind of you thank you very much.
The soldiers in question are William Joseph Toole that has an address given as 36 Church Street, Hulme and Joseph Toole who should have been on the absent voters register, also in Hulme.
In respect of William J, I would like to see who is resident at 36 Church Street,Hulme just in case the name is his girl friend or her parents or his grandparents. His grandparents were named Clark and his future wife Wood.
In respect of Joseph any available absent voters list check please for a Joseph Toole would be great, he should have been in the Hulme areas.  I think he may have been killed in action in 1915, but it is hard to be sure as there are other Josephs. I have eliminated two of them and I am down to three, of which this Joseph is one.
I know this sounds garbled but there are no service records for any of my Family at the NA or Ancestry apart from one pension record.
If you can help me I would be very pleased to have your advice, there is no hurry I have taken years to get this far!
Thank you again,
Regards,
Pat

Right only thing i could find as you never told me if or what trade he did?  The 1913 is only a trade directory and could not just look for a name only as it would take fore ever and a day to find and that is if they were in it to start with. Sorry.
William Joseph Toole was registered on the AVL 1918.
William Joseph. 36 Church street Hulme Pte 300145 RMAC
Joseph would not be on this as you say he died 1915?

As for any other names you gave, the only surname that came up was
Richard Clark at 96 Church street Hulme.  3490 2nd Manchester regiment.

Thank you so much Migky. Joseph Toole was an apprentice steam engineer fitter in the 1901 Census, age 14, and although he may have died in 1905 there are still two more that could be him, one in Manchester and is a driver in the RE and I do not know the civilian occupation of the other other one.

I would have expected my Joseph Toole to be in the Hulme area. He was married at Prestwich so he could be anywhere in Manchester. All his family had entries in the earlier Trade directories as they were largely self employed, but as Joseph would have been an engineer of some kind I expect he would have worked for an organization rather than be self employed. I do keep hoping that he did not die in1915.

In respect of William Joseph Toole my goodness that Clark was a good find perhaps he was an Uncle. ( W.J.'s father died in 1914) He did not marry until 1922. I will research this one further to see if there is  a connection. I regret I do not know his occupation as he was only 5 in the 1901 census. He did not follow his father's trade of bricklayer and the only time I met him was during WW 2, and my memory is very sketchy of him, but I am almost certain he was in an army uniform then as well. Now I will see what I can find about Richard Clark.

Thank you again Migky you have been very kind to me and if there is now a chink of light it will be entirely due to you.

Kindest regards,
Pat

Dear Migky

Thank you I never thought of that. I have checked Clark's immediate family, but no mention of a Richard, but as the two sons were of marriageable age in 1881 it is possible that the one of the boys had a son Richard, so I will follow that through into the 1901 census. My people did not stray too far from Hulme and Manchester.

Thank you again for your help and advice it is so much appreciated.

Kindest regards,
Pat

Yes he is Heather, but it is not conclusive as there are two more Joseph's that could be him. It is so hard without service papers but I have traced and confirmed three others in my family. These last two are the most difficult, and I keep grasping at any straws. I was very hopeful that there could be a link for William Joseph to Richard Clark, but if there is I cannot find one, but you never know something might yet surface if I keep diggin'.

Thank you so much for your interest Heather.
Kind regards,
Pat
