she's Bell - and I've already managed to trace her back to her father, and am working on him as well!

Have you already traced a marriage between James Bush and Isabella?  I don't easily see it, but obviously a marriage certificate should give you information about James' father.

no i haven't traced marriage of James Bush and isabella yet - and that brings me on to a general question for all you experts - what is the easiest way to trace a marriage?  I found the first one (James Jr to Edith Agnes Bell)  by looking in the marriages reg for marriages in name of Bush around the right time and in the right place - then looking uner the name of Bell (which I knew from birth certificate) to see if one matched.  Is this the best way or is too long-winded?  Is there a different method?  I'd love to be able to check out a name of a person getting married,  and find the name of the person they're marrying at the same time, but is that possible anywhere?
thanks! Smiley

Yes, there are a number of places to look this up but for the 19th and early 20th centuries (1837 onwards) the easiest way is to search on FreeBMD

www.freebmd.org.uk

and when you have a page reference for one spouse, click on the page number to find other brides and bridegrooms listed on the same page.

NB FreeBMD is based upon a volunteer transcription exercise, and is not yet complete. There are coverage charts on the site to show where they've got to.

When you said James' mother's maiden name was Bell - did you mean that James' wife's maiden name was Bell?  (Edith Agnes Bell)

Or was James' mother Isabella a Bell too?

bit confused .... so BELL was James jnrs mum's maiden name or not ? (Given you mention sourcing it from a Birth Cert)

Otherwise it looks like you mean it was his Missus maiden name ?

The 1876 Cert for James Edward - Mum was Isabella who ?

Oooh yes, I have become generationally confused here!
The James Edward Bush i am starting with (my great-grandfather) was born 1876.
1899 He married Edith Agnes Bell.  So yes, that was his WIFE's maiden name. Ahem.
I know for certain his father was also James  Bush.
I have a birth certificate that I'm pretty sure is correct and it says his mother was Isabella Bush, formerly Potter ( which seems to corroborate  the isabella in the census - assuming my birth cert is correct!!  Only discrepancy is in terms of father's occupation - on James jr's marriage cert, father's occupation is Carman.  On this berth cert, father's occupation is Laborer.  I just hope it is the right person.

Does that all make sense?
Even I have to keep stopping to check who on earth I'm talking about, and it's MY family for heaven's sake....all very mind-stretching..... Smiley

I wouldn't worry about carman/labourer/general labourer - I've definitely seen carmen described more generally as labourers before.

Looks like 'Ibeach' or 'Heach' with a wobble.

I now think the birthplace given for Isabella in 1881 is a phonetic attempt at High Beech; there's an Isabella Potter b abt 1840 High Beech, Essex, who is in Surrey in 1851: HO107/1604/168/32

...and in Hampshire in 1861: RG9/698/126/7

She's a daughter of a widowed Maria Potter b abt 1808 (per 1851) or 1806 (per 1861) in Wellington, Shropshire.

This seems to be the Potter family in 1841:

Mott St, Hamlet of Sewardston, Waltham Abbey, Essex

Maria Potter 30 [no occupation listed]
Eliza do 9
Henrietta do 7
Sophia do 5
Isabella do 2

(none born in county other than Isabella)

HO107/341 bk 9 folio 6 p7
