I am trying to find a birth or baptism for William Henry Chittleburgh, probably in Woodton, Norfolk. I think he was born c1843.
He married Lavinia Sheldon in New Wortley, Yorkshire in 1870. He gave his age as 28 and occupation as brickmaker. I think it says he was a widower (if anyone can help with an earlier marriage, that would also be great) No father's name is given on the certificate - does this mean he was illegitimate?
I think I have him on 1851 census in Woodton, living with his grandparents John and Elizabeth Chetleburgh (the spelling varies a lot!). After his marriage to Lavinia we know where he was until his death in 1923 in Burton on Trent.
If any kind helpful person is able to help me find out who his parents/mother was I'd be very grateful.
Claire

Thanks for all of that suffolk*sue - must have missed that possible 1st marriage as Chittlebourgh is not one of the many spellings I have come across. Sometimes all it takes is a new pair of eyes for something to become more obvious - you have no idea the hours spent on this man....
The grandparents also match what I thought, but I still need to find out his parents, or at least mother for confirmation

Claire, the birt that Tati found looks a good bet. The best way would be to purchase the cert, unless someone can look up a baptism for you in the parish registers.

Thanks Tati,
I have a copy of that certificate but had dismissed it - his mother is given as Elizabeth Chettleburgh, no father, but as far as I know at the moment the people I think are his grandparents did not have a daughter called Elizabeth. This could, of course, be another oversight on my part (or more accurately, that of my other half - it's his family ).
It all needs more investigation, but visiting records offices etc is a bit difficult as I am in Spain. Thank heavens I discovered all the lovely people on Rootschat
Claire
I think the mystery may have been solved - I'm off to look for Elizabeth Chittleburgh now and I'll let you know how it all goes. Thanks again for all your help - I can't believe something that has bugged me for so long has probably been solved in about 15 minutes. Rootschatters rock

So wonder if the Minns in the name is a clue. Elizabeth could have given him his fathers name as a middle name.
I wonder if it might be worth trying to find bastardy records, that might record who his fathers was.
