Can't see the wood for the !!!
|
Does anyone know anything about the history of The Hand and Shears inn at Church Hanborough please? Am I correct in thinking the name reflects the wool industry in the Witney area? I have Walter GILES as Inn keeper in 1901 but wonder how long he was actually there for some reason I can't access Historical directories lately. Walter married the daughter of the publican of the Britannia in Thrupp I would also be interested in the history of that one I believe it became The Jolly Boat Man many Thanks Trees

The "Hand and Shears" pub at Church Hanborough is still a pub - ironically it re-opens today after a period of closure for renovation and refurbishment. It was featured in the local newspaper last night.
Have you tried telephoning the pub to see if the current licensee knows anything of its history ?

Hi Trees
It was more in the "pretty little place" category, with the emphasis on food - but as it has just been closed and refurbished, I can't be sure what it will be like now.
Ironically enough, this society's President-Emeritus Jeremy Gibson - author of the series of "Gibson Guide" books - lives next door to the pub. I'll give it a day or so, and then find out from him what it is now like.
The roads out at Church Hanborough are rural, but I don't think your caravan will cause any problems. And the pub has a car park across the road.
Best wishes.
