In the 1861 Census my GG Grandfather Joseph Dent was a 'Landed Proprietor' and Farmer at Brackenbar, Westmorland.

What exactly is a 'Landed Proprietor'

Although I THINK I know what this means I am finding it difficult to get an EXACT definition for this term.
