Passengers to NSW 1853
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 12:15 BST (UK) »

Hello everyone,
Another possible family of the Harding's in Cookham
has turned up!  This time I have a lot more
information that I think points in the right direction.

This family arrived Australia on January 10th 1853
in NSW on board the Rattler. (Ancestry and
NSW ass. Passenger list 2136,2465)

They are:
Henry Kent born 1827 in Cookham
Louisa Kent (neé Harding) Born 1823 Cookham
They married in Cookham in OND 1848 (V1 337)

Children:
Charles Henry Kent Born OND 1848 Cookham (V1 166)
George  probably born on the voyage as he is not found in
Cookham 1852 & they arrived January '53

In the 1841 census they are both single and in Cookham
with their separate families

In the 1851 census they are married and in Cookham with a
Baby under 1 month (age out but it is the census)

I cannot find them in 1861.

Charles Kent ( the son) married Hannah Robinson in NSW
(born Yorks 1850) and they had a daughter Louisa
Kent in NSW 1872-1957

Any help in proving they belong to the James Harding
and Sarah Rixon family of Cookham would be very helpful.

Do hope someone can help,
Regards,
Abiam

Hi Abiam Grin

You could start by searching the free online NSW bdm's

Hi Albium

Found this for you on the nsw indexes

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm
Marriage
1871      KENT      CHARLES HENRY      ROBINSON      HANNAH      INVERELL

The deaths give parents names so worth a search.
NSW certificates give a good amount of information including both parents names on marriage certificates. Death certificates give all living and deceased children plus the length of time living in Aust.

If you decide to buy a certificate tit is cheaper and quicker to use a transcription agent.

Just about to reply!
Yes I found it thank you - with your advice.  NSW seems a lot more helpful than SA.
Do you know where I can see the passenger list for the ship the Rattler? Arrived Jan 1853.

Hi Abiam,
I'm sure by now you have had a good explore around nsw bmd and found children and marriages of your Kent people.

I cannot be certain, just from these index entries that all the  births recorded to Charles and Hannah Kent are to your Charles and Hannah Kent.

However, they do occur in the Inverrell and Warialda area with Louise  [as you know] being one.

If Charles Nathan Kent[ born in 1879] turns out to be a person of interest to you, here is a picture of his headstone at Warialda.

In my looking about at the family in NSW, I did not come across any distinctive naming of children which might have been a pointer to the connection you are looking for with Rixon.

Keep combing, something will maybe pop up Grin

Sue

Ps NAA service record for Charles Nathan also to be seen. ww1 Farmer/grazier.

Success!!! Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

Hello Sue, Cando and Redgum,

Thank you all for your help it all points to the right family and this is the clincher

http://cemindex.arkangles.com/inscription.php?id=2151649

Also Louisas' death gives parents James and Sarah.

10630/1876 KENT LOUISA JAMES SARAH WELLINGROVE

The above arrived this morning via Rootsweb.

So, after the exciting hunt for John Wise in SA, the disappointing wrong info I

was given eleswhere on George Harding in Victoria, which led to a merry

chase, with no result I now have another Australian Family!  I am so

pleased Cheesy

I was afraid to mention that this last contact was also from GR!!!  This time I

contacted her but she only had the marriage of Louisa and Henry I shall be

able to send her lots of "stuff".

Anything else anyone finds will be gratefully received as I fill my time learning

about NSW and the area around Inverall.

Thanks again,
Abiam  Kiss

Sue,

I'm afraid Charles Nathan is not mine as I now know mine was Charles Henry and he died in 1933.  I now have a photo of his wife's gravestone with his name added later.

Thanks for your help now back to more delving Smiley

Sue,
Please accept my apology for jumping the gun.  Charles Nathan Kent was the son of Charles Henry who was the son of Henry Kent.  I was looking at him as the son of Henry!

I have found his army record and am trying to print out the best parts but what a slow job!  But I will get there.

I found a very strange name in the births - Merab Mary A Kent.  Has anybody come across Merab before or do you think it could be an error?

Thanks again,
Abiam

Hi,

As you will see, with more nswbdm combing, MERAB, the name continues to appear in her marriage details to Joseph Arnold at Grafton and probably in otherof the bmd  events listed  of her life which I will leave for you to look up .

I feel somehow certain that it is her name.
As I mentioned, I have been looking out for anything distincvtive as you are trying to link your Rixion's to this  group, but don't know if Marab is anything you have seen before.
Sue

PS Sydney William KENT died 1965.  Can't locate much about him.

I have to apologise to you again Sue.  I missed this post!

I have so many people in this family that I don't think I'll ever sort them!  But I have just come across 2 trees in Ancestry also with loads of Kents in Inverell and surrounds.  I am getting in touch with them and hopefully between us we can sort the relevent ones.

The name Harding cropped up on one of the Kent deaths so I really am sure I have the right family.  And I think they, as a family, liked religious names.  Part of their family in Yorkshire in the late 1700's early 1800's had Mary, Bethel, Jonas, John and Hannah.  They all sound a bit biblical although I don't ever remember Merab in my Sunday school days!

Anyway thank you again for your help,
Abiam
