I wandered lonely as a cloud.........
|
Hello,
I'd like a little help if possible!
Can anyone help me to find out anything about the following BELLs please? My Grandmother is/was Janet Bell (moved to Skewen, South Wales, 1920's. brothers James (Jim) and Thomas (Tom) moved to Llandarcy, Skewen on the opening of the then new Oil Refinery - 1921). Parents were William Bell 1865 - 1920 and Mary Moore 1870 - 1908 who were married in Livingston. William was a foreman in the Shale Oil works and they lived in Faraday Place (foremans cottages), Addiewell.
Perhaps this might also help someone with Bells in their family
William George Bell 1891–1917 Richard Moore Bell 1892–1913 Mary Dawson Bell 1893–1980 Thomas Bell 1895–1976 David Bell 1897–1973 James William Bell 1898–1971 Stewart Ogilvey Bell 1898–1899 Charles Moore Bell 1898–1920 Martha McBryde Bell 1900–1924 Catherine Logue Bell 1901–1982 Agnes Fibiger Bell 1904–1913 Euphemia Moore Bell 1906– Janet Bell 1907–1994
particularly curious about the Fibiger name, apparently links with a Danish sea captain have been rumoured!
many thanks

I have a posting elsewhere here on Marshalls of Addiewell. You will see they lived in Faraday as well. I wonder if it was at the same time? Isnt it amazing these years on here we are discussing relatives who were neighbours? We should pool any research we get.

Hi Folks. I too have uncovered ancestors who worked in the Oil Industry in West Lothian. They were McGoohans and McCanns. However, they lived in the poorer part of uphall at Simpsons Rows. It is amazing that all these peole would have known each other and been neighbours. Regards, Lynda

Even more amazing it looks like my relatives lived in number 3 immediately before the bells that are pippylongs relatives - now is that not weird. Not sure your dates but my trelatives appear there in the 1891 census and the Bells in 1901. I cant find my relatives anywhere in 1901 census ;(

Hi Robert and Lyndyloo,
They must have all walked the same streets, probably known many of the same people, worked together - I can only imagine, but it must be a wierd feeling walking the same streets roads etc. as our ancestors - to stand and see the houses for yourself............I wonder what would happen if Robert did knock on a door! you do wonder what they would be like now! My Dad says he remembers - great big holes in the walls that they called beds - I think maybe he was told stories of this unless they lived there for many years after the 1901 census - but it is possible I suppose. If anyone has any more pictures/photos they would be wonderful to see, and a big to mosstrooper for his part in this.
Here we are over 100 years later with families who worked in the same place in the same industry!! Wow!
Good to hear from you,
Pip

Hi James,
Good to hear from you again . Thank you for the photos.
Conditions were very harsh, it is a wonder any child survived in places like this, makes us all the more grateful for what we have today and take for granted - running water, lavatories, heating, light and food a plenty on our tables! I wonder if they were happy though......
thank you again kind sir,
Pip
