Help please - I am trying to find John Hook in the 1851 census. He was born in abt 1790 in Marylebone and married Mary Ann Clifford in 1811.
In the 1841 census he is living in St George, Hanover Square with his wife and son, Frederick, who is a civil engineer.
I think Mary Ann died in 1850 (I found this on Free BMD). I have John Hook in 1861, this time living in Ealing with his daughter Mary Ann. He is given as a "Proprietor of houses" and is a widower.
He had four children - Charles, Mary Ann, John and Frederick, born in the early 1820s.....so far, I have only found Mary Ann and Frederick in a census - but not in 1851 - there are a lot of Hooks about, but somehow none of them seem to fit the bill......
If anyone could find John Hook in 1851 I would be very grateful.
Many thanks
Tilly

Hello Mum and Rosie
thank you for your messages.
Yes, looks as if Mary Ann survived 1951 at least!! I shall look for another Mary Ann Hook who could fit - amazing how many of them there are with that name................
I think half of my problem in the censuses is that I give up too easily - and I never think of putting in just the first name! :-[From now on, I will pull my socks up and try harder!! And I shall start tomorrow with John and Mary Ann's children..........;;
thank you again for your help

Tilly - I'd be very keen to discuss this John Hook with you, as he's one of my direct ancestors!
