I'm still on the hunt for the Runcorn family in Runcorn, Cheshire. I was trying to find George Runcorn b c1849 in the 1851 census. His sister Kate is elsewhere and I have her living with relatives.
I came across a Jane Runcorn who is described as a 'waterman's wife (absent)' What job did that mean he did and how would you go about finding him?

The reply to that unfortunately is,With difficulty
Men that just describe themselves as waterman with no clues make it so hard.As Stephan said they worked on the rivers, most were employed by companies or private owners.Or worked for the government, they might have been on barges, small boats ferry boats ;)The list is endless. Would you like to see if i can find George Runcorn in any of the directories. Is it just conincidence he lived in Runcorn do you think
