merchant seaman
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 15:58 BST (UK) »

I have John Blackmore born in Dublin 1897 married in Scotland 1924 on the marriage certificate is says in the merchant services. I can't find out what happened to him and not sure where to start. He was supposed to have died at sea but this may not be true if he did would he have been buried at sea?

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  If he died at sea then it is most likely he was buried there - unless they happened to be very close to land.   His death may well be registered so it is worth looking in the BMD index.
Have you tried looking for him in the merchant seamen's records?    Most are held at Kew.

You can get the catalogue reference numbers for Kew online but not the actual content, as far as I know.  Try putting a specific request on the Navy board here as I am sure someone will know what is available.  There are some navy records on www.familyrelatives.com   That site also has marine deaths but you have to pay to access them.  I have not used that particular facility.
