I am trying to solve some questions regarding my 4th great grandfather, Norman Chisholm. He was born in Stornoway. I have an image of his baptism record from the Scotland's People web site. It read as follows "Registers of Baptisms Knock and Swordle. 1808 To Donald Chisholm tenant of Knock and Mary Martin (and here I cannot make out the two next words. The 2nd word looks like spouse.) a son born March 1808. Baptised __ __ __ Norman" I have noticed that the rest of the entries on that page do not list the mother, only the father and the child's name and a date. I found it rather odd that Mary Martin is mentioned as being Norman's mother when no other woman is mentioned, and there is no date. Why would this be? Also, I cannot find a marriage between Donald and Mary on the Scotish web site. I thought maybe that is why Mary's name was added to the entry. Could it be possible that they were not married? I have looked in the IGI, but the entry there gives no date or place of marriage and no IGI numbers. I have looked for other children for the couple and have found some that may match, but only Donald Chisholm is listed as the father, no mother is listed, so I cannot tell if I have the right family. I would love to be able to trace this Chisholm family further back, but I am stuck for the moment. Does anyone have any ideas that would enable me to move on? I hope I wasn't too confusing! Thank you for your time!
I've had a look at the entry and it clearly says: Mary Martin his spouse (compare the slightly dropped s in Chisholm and his )
It is the last entry for that year and it also states that he was born March 1808. I can't see any others on the page mentioning birth date. Maybe the person entering it knew more about the family or whatever
Only marriages performed by a Church minister were entered into the records. However, this is a clear indication by the Church that they were married.
Thank you so much for that info! I just was not sure about that first word. Good to know they were married. Now I can look for their marriage record. Thanks!
