which way to go?
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 17:47 BST (UK) »

I have been researching family history for a couple of years primarily on ancestry.com.  My mother's family was from the Derbyshire area. I am having trouble getting any new information because there are no living relatives, besides myself.  I am in America.  Any suggestions?

Hi - Welcome to Rootschat

It depends what sort of thing you are wanting to know - if you have ancestry,  you have probably done most of the census stuff,  but if you post what you know on the appropriate county board sometimes there are specialists in that area who can advise you where to look and what to try next,  they will need the information that you have already collected

Hello, bjcglc, and welcome to Rootschat!

If you can find someone who was alive in 1901, you are off and away, as you can use the Census records.

You can order English Birth and Marriage certificates online.

So I'm sure it can be done.

If you'd like to put here what you know (no details of living people are allowed), then we'd all be pleased to help and make suggestions.

Arnold Nixson
born 1901 South Yorkshire, Yorkshire West Riding, Sheffield, England        (BMD)
died sometime in 1960's Derby, England
Mother:  Emilia Hammond (b1880)
Father:  unknown
raised by step father Albert Brown

This is my first dead end

Thank you for your replies and any information you can give me.

Purchase of the birth cert would give you parents names

Presumably Emelia Hammond married Mr Nixon and then Albert brown?

Do you know if Arnold had any siblings?

Just to make sure I have the relationships right (as I can't find anyone in 1901!)

Emilia Hammond married Unknown Nixson, and gave birth to Arnold; then she married Albert Brown?

At least the surname is unusual, which will help us.  Smiley

PS, Sorry Suz -  I seem to have duplicated your question!

Yes you have the relationships right.  Arnold Nixson, no known peers, was raised by Albert Brown, his stepfather.  I don't believe he ever knew his real father who presumably died when he was very young.  Thus Emilia was married to Mr. Nixson first and then to Mr. Brown.
Yes Nixson is a very unusual name, making this very difficult.  Arnold married Constance Beatrice Wood and they had two children.  Arnold Charles, the son was killed in 1944.  He was RAF.  Their daughter Vera, married a U.S. Army Sergent and moved to America.

Now found them in 1901

on ancestry it looks like this
John Nixon 26
Amelia Nixon 24
Eliza Nixon 6
Elizabeth Nixon 4
Winola Nixon 2 months

but if you look at the original Winola - is ARNOLD
RG13-4382 Fo37 P 12

Thank you for the information.  I know the census takers changed spellings often and it would be easy to drop the /s/ in Nixson.  I certainly sounds like John could be the father.  I will research that a bit.

Yes I thinks so - just a tip,  the further back you get the more variable the spellings,  before 1870 a high proportion of the working people were only semi literate,  so it depended entirely on the person writing the record.  Before about 1840 they didn't care at all
