A website question for someone who knows html code
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 18:13 BST (UK) »

Hi

The website I maintain at work has a very very long links page and we have decided to split it into 3 pages.

The introductory page will have links for the subjects under those 3 pages
ie
Heading 1
subheading1
subheading2
subheading3

Heading 2
subheading1
subheading2

and so on

My question is does anyone know if its at all possible to do an anchor from the subheading1 on the introductory page to the subheading1 bit of the Heading1 page?

Hope thats understandable.

I know how to do anchors within a page but I don't know if they are possible within different pages so that your link would take you to half way down another page rather than just the top with every single one of them.

Local anchor:
Code:
<a href="#subheading2"></a>

Anchor on another page:
Code:
<a href="./page3.html#subheading2"></a>

or even a page on another website:
Code:
<a href="http://www.my-other-website/page3.html#subheading2" target="_blank"></a>

target="_blank" opens the page in a new window/tab.

To go to a specific location on a page:

Page 1
<a href="page2.htm#5" target ="_blank"></a>

On the second page you need to have a target called 5 embedded in the page in the example below, at the correct location:

Page 2
<a name="5" /a>
