Does anyone know of any? Now that AVG has become so obtrusive and problematic, slowing everything down to a crawl, and not loading properly?
Could one manage with just a firewall (like Zone Alarm), plus maybe Spybot and/or Adaware, and the occasional online scan by Panda Security?
Any clever suggestions, please?
I think at this stage maybe I might even think about paying for something reasonable, if it was good.
Look forward to hearing from you.

I had already taken avg off because it was really slowing me down. I downloaded avast, as a few people on here appear to have it. So far it seems to be ok, but I'm no expert, I just hope it is.
That majorgeeks site looks really useful, downside.

I went with Avast.
I might try AVG 8 on the other computer - they have been supporting AVG 7.5 until tomorrow - so I kept it.
Is it still bad?

I've been using Avast for about 5 years without a problem and no infections.

I've used AVG for many years without any problems....
................. Until Version 8.0. Have now removed it and installed
Avast, which is also free. It seems to run without any major
problem. ( It does make me jump though, when it updates and
a voice suddenly tells you that it has )
AVG will continue to support 7.5 until Xmas this year I understand.
Take notice of what downside says. A Firewall is not an Anti-virus
programme.

I also had Avira which seemed to work O.K. That was a
free version.

Hi
I am still using AVG 8 which I downloaded a while ago. I had no problem with the download and I am very happy with its day to day performance (as I have always been with previous AVG versions). I have not noticed any slowing down nor obtrusiveness (or, indeed, intrusiveness).
However, I am aware that many other people have experienced problems with version 8 and have sought alternatives. Avast is apparently a very good alternative but I have also heard very good reports about Avira AntiVir which, in several tests, outperformed both Avast and AVG.
I, personally, would go for one or other of these.
To reiterate and reinforce what others have already said, you really do need to have a good antivirus program installed, up to date and working, in addition to a firewall and (a selection of) anti spyware programs.

It's not being phased out and it's been free for a very long time
in different versions. 7.5 is being phased out and being replaced
by version 8.0 Unfortunately Version 8.0 seems to be very buggy
on certain systems, whereas some people aren't having any trouble at
all.

They are not issuing updates to AVG 7.5 after today! So they are NOT supporting it until Christmas, at least not in this neck of cyberspace!

I use NOD32 from Eset. Its a paid for AV that has a small footprint (ie uses very little memory or processing power ) and is fully automatic with hourly updates to stay ahead of the viruses. I had been using Norton but got fed up with the way it slowed the computer down. The first time I ran NOD32 it picked up a number of infections that Norton and AVG had missed.
I use the AV version of it together with a free firewall (Zone Alarm) and free anti spyware (Spybot). The AV only is about £27 a year. There is a fully integrated package at about £40 which does the lot - AV, spyware, firewall and spam which I haven't tried yet.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security, but when the subs run out I will be switching to Eset NOD32 with firewall. NOD32 is the best performing virus checker out there, especially with "in the wild" virus detection, where it out-performed all the others.
This comment is not aimed at anyone in particular, but I can't understand why people are reluctant to pay for what is probably the most important software on their PC
