It depends on which version of Norton you have. Norton AV is not too bad, Norton Internet Security 2007 is slow but OK, but if you upgrade to Norton Internet Security 2008, you will probably wish you hadn't, if you are an ancestry.co.uk user

This comment is not aimed at anyone in particular, but I can't understand why people are reluctant to pay for what is probably the most important software on their PC No, no - my reluctance to shell out money isn't just restricted to AV software - it goes much, much wider!!
A penny saved is a penny earned.

I use NOD32 from Eset. Its a paid for AV that has a small footprint (ie uses very little memory or processing power ) and is fully automatic with hourly updates to stay ahead of the viruses. I had been using Norton but got fed up with the way it slowed the computer down. The first time I ran NOD32 it picked up a number of infections that Norton and AVG had missed.
I use the AV version of it together with a free firewall (Zone Alarm) and free anti spyware (Spybot). The AV only is about £27 a year. There is a fully integrated package at about £40 which does the lot - AV, spyware, firewall and spam which I haven't tried yet.
I use Kaspersky Internet Security, but when the subs run out I will be switching to Eset NOD32 with firewall. NOD32 is the best performing virus checker out there, especially with "in the wild" virus detection, where it out-performed all the others. This comment is not aimed at anyone in particular, but I can't understand why people are reluctant to pay for what is probably the most important software on their PC I have Eset security suite, would not believe how easy it is on the PC, kept checking it was working....as it is effortless on the system.
As major concern....we have all had, somewhat, nasty stuff happen via internet malware/virus etc, if you can afford, review what is on offer - I have heard that Avast, if you are on a budget, is quite good, and seems less problematic than AVG nowdays...
But I would advise updating, to something you can TRUST, that you KNOW takes care of your PC health, and is as problem free as it can be. Perhaps AVG have put these blips into version 8 to get you to pay to upgrade If so...review what is out there then make an informed choice. At the end of the day you get what you pay for, or don't, so just switch if you can.....

Interesting thread and comments!
I have AVG 8 on my home computer and it works fine......no problems at all, but on my work computer (which is where I'm typing now )it caused many problems, and drove my boss mad!!

I use Trend Micro Security Pro - at slight expense to the management I've had it for three years and to date had no problems. I only upgraded to the Pro version recently on the advice of an IT tech.

I upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2008, a couple of weeks ago! I bought the disks because having had one crash, I like to know that I can put it all back, if it happens again! They came the next day! I had a problem with the settings, so I emailed the company Symantec, they phoned me at once and set it all up for me! It is excellent! I really do reccommend it. I had to lose spybot and ad-aware to install it, but I have everything I need on this version so I did not need them. Rabbit B As long as you don't want to view images on Ancestry, you'll be fine with Norton Internet Security 2008. Personally speaking, I wouldn't put it on the computer of my worst enemy...... too invasive, slows the PC down too much, and its "in the wild" detection of new viruses is inferior to the likes of Kaspersky and Eset NOD32.
