am hoping that someone can help. I am looking for any information, pictures and hopefully the name of the alms houses that were on hibbert street, luton in about 1927 ish. Have a person that am looking for and know they lived there. Is there any website or place that i could find out the names of people that stayed there?
The almshouses are the Hibbert Street Almshouses, founded by Robert Hibbert in 1819 on Castle St. Later (late C19th) moved to a new street behind which was named Hibbert St.
Don't know of any online sources for the occupants in the 1920s but electoral rolls and street directories will exist for that period and will show the occupiers. There may also be minute books etc. for the charity which show the appointments of new occupants.
The charity is still running - you could try asking them for help. Robert Hibbert's Almshouse Charity 9a George Street West Luton LU1 2BW Tel: 01582 724 123

I have Luton directories for 1911 & 1917; at the start of the 'odd' side of the road there are 24 names/properties known as Hibbert Cottages.
Let me know if you want to check for any specific name.

Thank you for the offer - if you could have a look for me it would be good
Draper was the surname.
Is it right that the Almshouses were for women only? I have not as yet had a reply from my letter that I sent. I have been trying to find photgraphs of them too.
Sorry to say that there is no Draper name in either directory.
You are right they are all women; all the names are Miss / Mrs

Hello Kazdel, new to this board but live in Luton so have been along to Hibbert St and taken two photographs. Just have to wait for sons to come home so they can show me how to get them from my digital camera to you!
They are still very much in use today and are really lovely. They are known for their floral displays and seem really 'cosy and friendly' There were some residents (women still!) in the garden today sitting together in bright sunshine having a cup of tea and they looked happy and content. I hope it was the same for your relative. They have a date of 1885 on the front which I have tried to capture in the photograph.
I work part time in the library and will see if they have any records for Draper when next I am in.
Don't be so cynical David, today, like yesterday, was absoutely lovely; after the early morning mist cleared (about 10:15) the sunshine was gorgeous - I was in Houghton Regis today,
