Can anyone help me locate  the family of Mary Alice Davis born  Banbury 1862
on the 1871 Census?

Hi

I notice that her birth was registered in the September qtr of 1862 in Banbury

The registration district of Banbury spans the boundaries of the counties of Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire so she could have been born in one of the other counties.

With a name like Mary Davis - It would probably be safer buying a copy of her birth cert to make sure you get the right info. 

Once you have her parents names, we should be able to find her on the 1871 census for you

Hi

Still nothing on the 1871.  Did you get her fathers name from her marriage cert?

Just something to bear in mind - quite often, illegitimate children made up a fathers name when they married so as to appear "respectable"

If this is the case with Mary - her mother may have married before 1871 and Mary could be shown under her mothers married name in error

Alternatively - if she was legitimate, George may have died pre-1871 and mum may have re-married

Hi Carol

George  Davis is named on Mary`s marriage certificate  his occupation given as Clerk.
Mary is living in Sevenoaks at this time

Mary  gives her place of birth as Banbury(Branbury) on the 1901 census when she is married to her second husband.  Living in Sussex.

Was hopeing to find something from the 1871,  couldn`t find her on the 1881.

Hi - I am still trying on this one,  can you give us the details from the 1901 where you ahave found her so we can have a look?  have you found her in any other census?  I checked the reg transcripts for baptisms at the 2 Banbury churches and couldn't see her

I'm taking a chance that this is the right 1901 entry for Bexhill Sussex

George White 49 platelayer birthplace not shown
Mary A 39 b Oxfordhsire Branbury (presumably should be Banbury)

Now - this is where it gets complicated

1891 for Sussex

Thomas Upfield 38 b Sussex Heathfield
Mary A  36  b London   - only 39 in 1901
Charles W 3 b Sussex Bexhill

Thomas Upfield and Mary Alice Davis married in 1884 in Sevenoaks Kent

Mary Alice Upfield married George White in 1900 in Sussex

We could go round in circles with this one but without a copy of her birth cert you will not really get anywhere

Hi Carol,

Must have been a touch of vanity Mary Alice claiming to be 36 on
the 1891 census.  Genes still evident in the family today!

Have just received birth certificate for Mary.  Parents names are George and Phoebe Davis.

Have searched FBMD for a marrriage for them which appears to be for Lambeth 1859 Dec .

Will it be possible for you to look at the 1861 Census for George and Phoebe Davis and /or for Mary with her parents on the 1871 Census? The family appeared to have moved around quite a lot.

Any help will be gratefully received.
