Read 1st - Military Records at Archives Wgton
« on: Wednesday 25 June 08 01:17 UTC (UK) »

Just to explain there are different conditions covering Military Records at Archives Wellington.

Normal records have a “cut off” time every 30 mins throughout the day.
eg. if you put a request in BEFORE 9:30am, the record will be available AFTER 10am.

With Military records they only have 2 retrieval times per day:
before 12:30 which will then be available AFTER 4:30pm that day; and 5pm which will be available after 12:00 the following day.
so it really requires 2 visits as Archives close at 5pm.

update 9 Sep 2008
Military Files now take 15 working days!!!

Aug 2009 update:
Military files are now taking approx 3 months.
they process the "paying" requests first, so quicker if you contact them direct....

ALSO, you are only allowed 1 Military record per retrieval time – ie max 2 per day.

ALSO you are only allowed 5 items against your name at any one time.
Ordering a military record effectively means that you are then reduced to 4 normal items at any stage in the system against your name.

There are 3 main stages:
Requested; - self explanatory.
Held out: - record has been found and is available for the borrower.
Issued: - this covers not only records that you are reading, but also records that you have returned, but staff have not entered back onto the system.

So looking up Military records is not straightforward.

Of course if it is urgent, you always have the option of contacting Archives direct.

Hope this explains what might appear at times to be a "lack" of look up offers for Military Records.

Bren

WHAT INFORMATION DO THESE MILITARY RECORDS CONTAIN  ?

WW1  :

In almost all instances, a file will contain a copy of the soldier's Attestation Form (filled in at time of enlistment), stating personal details which usually include,  full name, d.o.b., religion, next-of-kin and address of same,  occupation & last employer, education level attained, etc.   There may also be information giving - parents names, name of spouse and any children, (sometimes also a date/place of marriage).
Note:   It does seem that there were several versions of this Attestation Form - one of which gives only very basic information.

Service Details:    "Theatres of Operation" giving dates/places, transportation means, injuries sustained or, other medical data, incidences of illness/hospitalisation etc., misdemeanours/punishments:    Rank/promotions :    Date of discharge:    Medals awarded :
Note:   Obviously, Army personnel did not write screeds of notes to cover all detail  ...  much of the information on file, relating to service,  is therefore shown in an abbreviated format or military jargon is used.

What these records do not contain:

These records do not contain information about the actions and battles a person was involved in.
Nor do they include a day-by-day account of a persons involvement in the service.

NOTES:

It needs to be mentioned, that what is available from, or is included in these military files, varies greatly !.     [Something akin to a lottery].

The WW1 records held at Archives New Zealand in Wellington, are largely all on microfilm,  so when you order one for viewing, what you get in effect, is a bundle of photocopied pages from the file.   The qualtity of the photocopies is variable.

                             -------------------------------

Australian Miltary records are rather similar to those of New Zealand:   The following link will take you to a page which gives an idea of what you can expect to see recorded on a WW1 file.
