Hi!

In my previous posting I mentioned James McDonald who married Rachel Campbell in 1787 at Kirkmaiden by Drummore in Wigtownshire. In this posting we will be taking a look at another James McDonald, but 62 years later and at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

We find an extracted Marriage Certificate on Batch No: M118985  Dates: 1839-1854  SCN: 1068041.

James McDonald married Elizabeth Buyers on the 13th December, 1849 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

Now we move forward in time again to the time of the Census taken in 1881.

Dwelling:   Clenoch Parks.
Census Place:   Inch, Wigtownshire.
Source:   FHL Film 0224060  GRO Ref: Vol: 886  Enum Dist: 10  Page: 4.

James McDonald  Head  Age 53  Agr. Lab.  born at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Elizabeth Buyers Wife    Age 47                  born at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Mary McDonald    Daur   Age 20 Dressmaker born at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire
James McDonald  Son    Age 13  Scholar     born Kirkcolm, Wigtown.
Ann McDonald      Daur   Age 11  Scholar     born Kirkcolm, Wigtown.
Mary Steen  Grand.Dau Age 3                     born at Stranraer, Wigtown.

The distance between Stranraer and Stoneykirk is only about 6 miles and it's about 12 miles from Kirkcolm to Stoneykirk.

My very best wishes,

Tom.

Hi!,

On Saturday, 5th July, 2008, Beannie was kind enough to supply us with some MI's from the cemetery at Stoneykirk in Wigtownshire. In that posting, she made mention of the connections between the McGill's and the Marshall's and therefore, the McDonald's. I have to admit, I thought that I was going to be in for a pretty torrid time because, surely I was going to become involved once again with the Emerald Isle. I hasten to add, that it's the difficulty in retrieving data from Ireland that was going to give me such a time. I simply love Ireland, and look back on a business trip to Clonmel back in 1988 as a wonderful experience.

I wasn't far wrong though, because I was looking at some records from an 1881 Census, and the information that I managed to extract was quite an eye-opener.

Marianne (or Mary Ann) Hamilton was shown on the Census as a Widow. , who had been born in Ireland. After a bit of work, I found that her husband had been William McGill. I then found an extracted Marriage Certificate on Batch No: M118871  Date: 1855-1875  SCN: 6035516.

William McGill married Marianne Hamilton on the 9th of June, 1865 at Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire.

However, something simply didn't add up on the census, because there were a couple of children there with birth dates of 1857 and 1861 and in their mother's Maiden Name. Let's take a closer look.

Marianne McGill  Widow  Age 44 born in Ireland  Maiden Surname: Hamilton.
Rebecca Hamilton Dau    Age 23 born 17th Aug. 1857 at Kirkcolm. Ment. Defect.
William Hamilton  Son     Age 18 born 13th Sept. 1861 at Kirkcolm. Ment. Defect.
Peter Cunningham McGill Age 15 born 13th Dec. 1866 at Kirkcolm.
Mary Jane McGill                Age 7 born 11th Nov. 1872 at Kirkcolm.

So, once again, we are seeing yet another reference to a birthplace in Ireland.

My very best wishes,

Tom.

Hi beanie

Might be worthwhile starting a new thread for your lookup offer. This one looks to have become a discussion of one person's family

Hi beenie/beanie Grin

What a kind offer.

Do you by any chance have any Blains? If so, I will dig out my names as I do not want to put you to the trouble of transcribing any which may not be relevant.

Thanks  Grin

H Ruskie,

I'm sure that I recall a certain lady writing that she didn't think that anyone had a Copyright on a specific thread!  Grin  Is this what they mean when they say that it's a lady's privilege to change her mind?

Best wishes,

Tom.

Hi Beannie,

Referring to Reply #7 dated Saturday, 5th July. Correct me if I'm wrong, but surely it did commence with the words, "Hi Tom, Here are the MI's in Stoneykirk Cemetery". Naturally enough, I am absolutely delighted with the thoroughness of your work and the friendliness in which you carried it out. I see no complaints from you, so, one has to wonder what all the fuss is about by someone who really ought to know better.

Because of your kindness and your response to another researcher who is looking at Janet McGill, the wife of David Blain, I thought it may be helpful to other researchers if I supplied some further information on the family

An extracted Marriage Certificate exists for John McGill and Jane Paterson. It can be found on Source Info: Batch No: M118985  Dates: 1839-1854 Source Call No: 1068041.

Marriage:  1st June, 1848 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

Extracted birth/christening records for their children can be found on Batch No's C118981 & 5.

Elizabeth McGill born 1st April, 1849 at Stoneykir, Wigtownshire.
Janet McGill born 19th November, 1850 at Stoneykirk in Wigtownshire.
Agnes McGill born 30th July, 1852 at Soneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Margaret McGill born 20th February, 1854 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Jane McGill born 16th May, 1856 at Stoneykir, Wigtownshire.
Andrew McGill born 13th February, 1858 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Mary McGill born 4th February, 1860 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Andrew McGill born 7th September, 1861 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Marion McGill born 13th May, 1863 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
James McGill born 30th November, 1864 at Stoneykirk,
Wigtownshire.

One would think that this added information would be of some interest to anyone researching members of this family. Again, very many thanks for your kindness and cooperation.

Hi Russkie,

Reply #25 explains it to you in very simple language. I hope that the added information that I posted will be of added assistance to you. If there is any further detail that you may require, then, as always, I'm always delighted to help.

Hi Beanie

Terry couldn't help me, but would appreciate if you could have a look for the following:

If you have the time can you see if you have any Hamiltons in your MIs.
I think most of the family moved away, but I know of three who died in the area.
Mary Ann Hamilton, aged 8 months, died 18 March 1861 (parents William Hamilton and Margaret Elliot)
William Hamilton, aged 9 years, died 15 September 1877 (parents as above)
and William Hamilton married to Mary Elliot, aged 45, died 25 December 1882, run over by loaded cart.

Many thanks

There are 4 Hamilton's in  the Stoneykirk MI's
I think this one is yours
Erected in memory of William HAMILTON who died 15 Sept 1878 aged 9 years. Also William HAMILTON father of the above who died 25 Dec 1882 aged 78 years.

There is also a Joseph Hamilton late Land Steward Drumbreddan died 20/2/1896 aged 74 and his wife Jane Jackson died 8/1/1892 aged 70.

Elizabeth Hamilton died 27/1/1--- aged 89 years, by W. Coffel

Grace McHaffie Milligan sister of Mrs Hugh Milligan died 15/4/1918 aged 78.

If any of these are yours, let me know and will send the full transcription
There are 7 Hamiltons in Kirkmaiden
If you know any names and dates I will check them for you as it is the next Parish to Stoneykirk
Kind Regards
Jeanne

Hello Beanie,

May I squeeze in a request?

I would be grateful if you could look in the MIs for any reference to KELLY (eg Robert d 1864 at South Two Mark, Martha Kelly d1881 at Dalvaddie), MANN and LOUGHIE.

Best regards, M.
