Hi many apologies for delay in response - out at work all day and also the usual email message saying there are more replies failed on this occasion.
I believe they are
front George Steenhoven (or Steinhoven or Hoven) b c 1883 St George's East - although I know he was in the army at some point, because I have his records from Ancestry.
and
possibly Henry L Steenhoven (alternatives surnames as above) b c 1881 and William Steenhoven b c 1888.
I can't identify them apart from the fact that I think the one in front is George as he is similar to other photos I have, and the one standing back right looks rather younger than the other two, which makes me think he's William.
But any opinions welcomed!
If the front figure is the same as this man, then I think he is George Steenhoven

Hello Igor,
I've found a MIC for a W Hoven, 11 Bn Essex Regiment, Private 15505, died 26/9/15. It is on the NA and Ancestry.
CWGC has him as son of Victor and Annie Hoven. Also confirms his name as William.

George is also 11 Bn Essex, Private 15614, so they must have signed up on the same, or almost the same day. They also both embarked for France the same day. George was wounded 26/9/15. William died 26/9/15.

Thank you so much Forester and Scrimnet for the details.
I have a weird feeling knowing that George and William joined up together in the same regiment at nearly the same time and were evidently in the same action together, in which one was killed and one wounded - and for knowing that this was one of the last photos. My grandma had it in her things, with a note on the back that they were her brothers.
Thank you also for finding William (the parental details are spot on) on Ancestry, which I hadn't found.
I am puzzled why there are two in uniform and one not.
Does anyone think that the front man is the same as the other picture I posted? In which case, it is more or less definitely George, who was my grandma's favourite brother, and whom I knew (as "Old Unc") as a child.
thank you all.

Hello Igor,
I would have thought that the two standing were George and William. What do you know about Henry? I can't see any more MICs under the name of Hoven. I'm not convinced that the small photo is the same person as the one sitting in the group photo. He may not be in uniform for any number of reasons, particularly given the date of the photo (before the end of August 1915).
If you want some idea of 11th Essex involvement in the Battle of Loos, scroll down this link to 26th September 1915 - Hulluch Area; 11.00am

thank you very much. You are perhaps right, that Henry L didn't serve, and it is actually George back left, with William back right. That would seem to fit with the uniform details and the information you have found.
Many many thanks. I am very moved by the details of the battle of Loos. My son is preparing some background on World War 1 poetry for his A level English, and to see the faces of his greatx2 uncles, one of whom died, is quite an experience. I am actually lost for works, but I am sure you know what I mean.
