Clean and date for great grandfather's sister please
« on: Wednesday 25 June 08 23:16 BST (UK) »

The lady in this photograph was my great grandfather's older sister. Please could you clean this for me?

Can anyone give an approximate date for the photograph please?

Thank you so much
Angela

Hi Angela...nice big kickups on the shoulder seams but no sign of leg-of-mutton sleeving indicates a date frame of 1889-1893. Would that fit?

Cheers,
China

The photograph was sent to me by the lady's great grandaughter. She said she doesn't know who the little girl is.
I have discovered that Lewis Bros. photographers operated at the address given at the base of the photograph from 1894 until 1911. The lady in the photograph was born c1848. The youngest of her daughters was born c1889, so assuming that they were early customers at the studio (1894) this would mean that Mary would have been about 46 and if the little girl is her youngest daughter she would have been about 4 to 5 years old. This looks about right to me!

Thank you China, you are so clever at dating.

Thank you Carolyn for the lovely colouring of the photograph. You have done a superb job.

Angela

Thanks once again Dave. I will be able to send a B&W and a colour resore to the great granddaughter of the lady in the phtograph. I'm sure she will be delighted with both of them too.

Magic with the date china.
I found a reference to the photographers on RootsWeb...

Lewis Brothers.
2 Alchester St, Redditch, Worcestershire1896 - 1904
outside that date they traded under individual names...
and
I suspect that the address given as:
> 2 Alchester St, Redditch, Worcestershire 1896 - 1904<
should read ALCESTER Street, pronounced All-ster (by me), or All-sester (by some locals!)

So if the sleeves are 1893 at the latest, it means the gal was hanging onto a good dress and it was an early Lewis Bros photograph.

Thanks Paula for the lovely colour version and the information. The comment about the pronunciation of Alcester is quite true as I used to live in the area and have heard both versions used.

I found the rootsweb page you have quoted from. I found slightly different trading dates for the studio in a book produced by Redditch historians Alan Foxall and Ray Saunders. The book is called 'More Redditch Remembered' and has a section about local photographers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This book gives the trading dates for Lewis Bros studios at 2 Alcester Street as 1894 to 1911. They were certainly still trading there in 1906 as the book contains a copy of a 1906 Lewis Bros advert giving prices for 1906 specialities.

Whichever of the dates for the sudios trading is correct, it does look as though Mary did hang onto the dress she is wearing in the photograph for at least a year or two assuming she was one of the earlier customers at the studio. I had no idea whether the photo was taken in the earlier days of the studio during the 1890s or taken later during the early 20th Century, so China's dating for the dress helps to narrow this down to around the mid 1890's. China is SO good at dating. Clever girl!

My thanks to everyone for your help with cleanups and dating of the photograph.

Angela
