Hi All,
I’m looking for information on the Hamilton Family of Killybegs, associated with Fintra House. There are many Hamilton families in the area and I believe I may be descended from this one associated with this house/estate.
I’ve been told by various people that the family is well documented but I haven’t been able to track anything down. I do have a copy of this families family pedigree as lodged at the National Archives but it doesn’t got into detail for the line I require.
There are a couple of self-published local histories that may contain information but I haven’t been able to access them (Conaghan, Charles History and antiquities of Killybegs, Donegal Democrat, Ballyshannon, 1975. and Conaghan, Pat Bygones: New Horizons on the History of Killybegs, Killybegs, 1989).
My connection would be via the daughter of James HAMILTON and b. 1772 – d. 1813) and Elizabeth JOHNSTON/JOHNSON (b. 1756 –d. 1833). Her name was given as Sarah Gantley/Gaunlet Amelia HAMILTON. She was born in 1775 in Killybegs. Here family were Church of Ireland.
The G names sounds quite odd for a girls name (unless it’s some sort of family name). I believe it might be Gwendoline/Gwendolyn. One family legend is that the O’Donnell’s are related to someone called Lady Gwendoline Hamilton. This might be how this legend came about.
I am unable to check birth records (Donegal is not the Irish Family History Foundation website). I believe the only way to find this information is to do a parish register lookup?
Sarah was supposedly disowned by her family after she married her fathers Catholic estate manager, James Lewis O’DONNELL. I don’t know when or where these two were married. At some stage just before the birth of their first child in about 1810, they moved to Tyrone. I’ve been unable to find a marriage record for them there so I suspect they were married in Donegal. I don’t know what Church they were married in, for while she was disowned for marrying a Catholic, the children all appear to have been brought up Protestant.
The information I am after:
1) Sarah’s birth details (date, place etc) - b. 1775 in Killybegs C of Ireland 2) Confirmation of Sarah’s parents names 3) Hints to any possible siblings of Sarah’s (her obit mentions she is the youngest daughter). 4) Marriage date/location for James HAMILTON and Elizabeth JOHNSTON/JOHNSON although it is possible he was married to a Lucy MORRISON at some stage (not sure if before or after this marriage). 5) Marriage date/location for Sarah HAMILTON and James Lewis O’DONNELL some time before 1810 (give or take a few years!) possibly in Killybegs.
Sorry to post so many requests but I think all the information would be in the same location. I’d be more than happy to have any one of the questions answered.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.
Cheers, Michelle (in Australia)

Hi Michelle
Think I may have a one or two details. I have James Lewis and Sarah as having three children - Hamilton Lewis, Johnston Spence died near Strabane, and a Hannah but no further details. James seems to be my 4 x Great Grandfather via Hamilton Lewis who I think was a school master somewhere near Omagh where the family still has some decendents.

Michelle- Have you checked to see how far back the records for Killybegs Church of Ireland baptisms go back? Checked LDS catalogue and there are only Catholic church records for Killybegs listed. However, the book 'Bygones, New Horizons...' is listed in book format but unfortunately not microfilmed. This site will show the Church of Ireland diocese and parishes, etc.: www.ireland.anglican.org/index.php?do=information.dioceses&page=parishes&id=62

V,
I also have Hamilton Lewis, Johnston Spence and Hannah. I also have two others who are not confirmed - John James and Bernard.
Also, Johnston Spence went to the USA and I'm in contact with one of his descendents.
Yes, Hamilton Lewis was a teacher. I believe he worked at the Omagh Poor Union.

What do you have for Sarah's full name?
Cheers, Michelle

Hi Laren
I too am looking for ancestors by the name of Hamilton from Co Donegal - probably Milltown near Strabane if you have ever come across any.
But I have this on a family called Hamilton that attended Killbegs Common School if it is any help to you...
Their father was a farmer but I haven't a name for him...
Eliza Jane aged 4.4 years - Tullachoillin (presume this is where she comes from) Fanny - aged 6 Andrew - aged 5.5 and Archibald - aged 5.5
years 1.1.1867 to 25.8.1873
I found this some years ago on www.genealogylinks.net
I don't know yet if they have anything to do with my Hamiltons.
Hope it is of some help. Kind regards Cranstone
Kind regards
