After contacting the LMA, I was informed they hold 23 pages of information on an ancestor of mine and if I am unable to attend the LMA myself to undertake the research, which unfortunately I cannot, then one of their paid researchers could do it on my behalf. For their fee they will extract information, that THEY consider would be of interest to me and send a few copies of same (I would like it all ).
Although they have supplied me with the document reference, which should help cut down on the research time, I would still have to pay for a minimum of one hour at £35, so it could prove fairly expensive, especially if I'm only supplied part of the information it contains.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has used this service before and if they were happy with it?

Two or three hours work would cost more than a day return on the train from many parts of the country. I'd go and look myself! Even the minimum £35 would be cheaper for quite a long way away - and for that you can get the whole lot, plus look up all sorts of other things whilst there.

I have to agree and I only wish I could spend the day there and look for myself - unfortunately, this option isn't possible at present, which is why I was considering paying.
Should have posted this in the common room, as I doubt anyone on the London boards, would use this service anyway!

I have used the LMA research service twice.
The first time for £35 I got success, right baptism and a photocopy of the page. Absolute delight.
The second time for £35 I had no success, however I had a long letter from them explaining that in the hour they had searched over and above the stipulated years I had sent them (looking for a baptism) and also from the description I had sent there were mention of a couple of other parishes they searched as well. They sent photocopies of all possibles they found, including that of brother of the baptism they were looking for.
I have to say despite the fact they didn't find the baptism I was after they were very helpful and thorough and it hasn't put me off using them again although I might actually get there one day myself.

Thanks Kerry for the positive feedback - I think I may go for it, as I have absolutely no chance of getting there myself, in the forseeable future.
They were quite helpful with the e-mail they sent me, which did inform me, of some of the personal records that they have for this particular ancestor, which included marriage and death cert., as well as his original application and promotional information (he was quite an important police officer!), so all in all, if I was only to get a few copies of any of the above, it could be worth it.

Well I have to say I feel I certainly got my moneys worth from them.
I compare it with another archive I paid for, which although it costed less, gave me back far less information.
I guess at the end of the day it comes down to the staff, how willing they are to help and how interested they are in the search. I had the feeling the LMA are all enthusiastic and keen historians themselves.
