Marriage Look-up please.
« on: Friday 27 June 08 09:03 BST (UK) »

I'm hoping  someone can help with a marriage look-up please.  My great grandfather Thomas L Hedges - born around 1852 in Abingdon and wife Jane E about 1860.
They are shown on the 1881 census living in Kingston on Thames, Surrey.
Their eldest child was born in 1878 so that is a starting point maybe?
I'm pretty sure the family came from Oxfordshire.
I'd be very grateful if a kind soul could trace this for me.
Cheers,
Dot.

Hi, I found this on Free BMD

Thomas Issac Hedges  marriage March 1877 Gravesend, and on the same page
Jane Elisabeth Woolfe

Could this be them?

Hi, Marg,
Whew, you were quick!  Just been and had my dinner and here is a reply all ready.
That looks promising, doesn't it?
I have the family on the 1861 census with Thomas home (of course, he was 10) with the family in Wallingford.
I shall have to look on the 1871 to see if I can pick them up.
Thank you so much for your help,
Kind regards,
Dot.

Hi Dot

I hope I'm not putting a spanner in the works,  but are you sure that the Thomas iin Wallingford is yours?  I have been trying to see yours in the census and I have him (I think) in 1881 and 1891 and by 1901 Jane is saying she is a widow,  but both times he says he was born in Abingdon,  Wallingford is not that close to Abingdon

Undecided

And the 1881 census is Thomas L and the marriage is Thomas Isaac?

Hi Debbie and Pauline,
Hmmm.  Yes, 1891 and 1901 are definitely my family.  You are probably right about the earlier ones. I've found two lots of Thomas Hedges in 1871 and one is down as born in Abingdon but has married Mary and not Jane.  Then there is the one born in Wallingford who was unmarried and at home.
Why  were so many little baby boys named Thomas?Huh
I have multiple ones in every branch of my tree.
Looks like I will have to send for certificates for Thomas L who was born around 1852.
Thanks for you interest in my query,
Kind regards,
Dot.

Hi Dot,  if you sent for one of the kids birth certificates it would give you the mothers maiden name,  then we could check which was the correct marriage,  I am afraid with more common surnames it often costs more in certificates to make sure you have the right people   Undecided

Do let us know how you get on
