James Joseph Quigley
« on: Friday 27 June 08 14:15 UTC (UK) »

J.J. Quigley came to Carrickmacross from Derry in 1922 to take up an appointment as post master and soon become heavily involved in the social and cultural affairs of the town. Some time after 1932 he resigned as post master and took over the business of J.J. Duffy & Co. mineral water manufacturer founded by J.J. Duffy circa 1897.

I have been informed by a senior citizen that J.J. Quigley married twice and that one of his wives was a daughter of J.J. Duffy.

James Joseph Duffy had two daughters, Anna Maria born 1896 and Mary Ellen born 1899 who I have not been able to trace since they were orphaned in 1912 along with their brother James Joseph Jr. born 1898 so this is my only clue. J.J. Quigley died in 1988 aged 93 but neither his long obit in the Dundalk Democrat or his death notice in the Irish Times mentions his wives.

Does any one know who J.J. Quigley married? I have been told his headstone in St Joseph's cemetery, Carrickmacross is inscribed in Irish. If anyone is familiar with it perhaps they will note if anyone else is buried with him.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Many thanks Mary, that could be his first marriage but it conflicts with a snippet of hearsay I received just last night from a Carrickmacross local historian who understands that J.J. Quigley's first wife was a Miss Ward, sister of a prominent clergyman in the diocese and that his second wife who he was unable to name was a clerk at the post office, but who knows, he may have married three times.

A good Irish friend is going to do a look up for me in the GRO marriage indexes in a few weeks time and if I can get the certificates as a result, I will find out whether he was a widower or not when he married Miss Ward.

Best wishes,
Terry.

I now have J.J.Quigley's first marriage certificate, he married Bridget Ward of Magheracloone 26th April 1921 at the Church of the Catholic University, Dublin City. At that time he was a Post Office clerk at Dundalk and she was a Teacher.

I still need to know who J.J. married next. I have learned that he had at least three children, Colette who died New York 1999, Paddy whose last known address was London and Ceara who married Tommy Mullen and lived at Sutton, North Dublin but I don't know if Bridget Ward was their mother or not.

Hi Terry,

Do you know if the Northern Standard had obits or death notices for J. J. Quigley?

As far as I'm aware it was published in Carrickmacross,

I've just noticed that the Standard is now connected to the Dundalk Democrat.

Thanks for your interest Christopher, I have had the Northern Standard checked out. I believe it was published Monaghan Town not Carrickmacross. I have since found that Brigid Quigley nee Ward died of a heart attack at the school where she taught at Drumgoosat in the parish of Magheracloone in 1934 aged 46.

My gg g/uncle (Swan) owned the newspaper, which indeed was in Monaghan town. Issues of the paper can be viewed in Clones library.

I need to send you a personal message but for security reasons you need to do three postings first so if you reply to this that should make it possible for me to send you a PM
