I've found them in various censuses - but I guess you already have that?

Have you got any of the children's birth certificates, with their mother's maiden name?

Not to worry -

At the moment I can't see a marriage for a Thomas Wilcox in Shropshire between 1861 and 1865;  Simon's birth was registered Q2 1865,  so possibly they married somewhere else.

It's going to be very difficult to find without Mary's maiden name;  I've tried looking on the 1861 census for a Mary born America and living in Shropshire and so far drawn a blank   Sad

I've also had a look at each of the children's birth regs. in case one was given Mary's name as a middle name, but drawn a blank there too   Sad  I haven't found a birth reg. for Alfred.

I really think that you are going to have to get one of the children's birth certificates to find Mary's maiden name .

Do you know how to do that?  (Not sure quite how new you are to FH  Grin )

And - do you want the census records from 1871 - 1901 for the family, or have you got them ?

Sorry - should be 1871 not 1971   Embarrassed

Thankyou

I have been doing my FH for a couple of years but by no means expert. Gone down wrong branches etc.

Would like to see the census records for family if you could tell me how it would be great for 1971-1901. Didn't know that was possible.

Thanks again

Hello again:  The 1881 census is free to view at

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

The others are available on Ancestry and Findmypast for a subscription and there is also a site called freecen - but I'm afraid I don't know much about that one   Sad   Embarrassed

I will put the 1871, 1891 and 1901 details together for you and post them in a short while!  Meanwhile - you look and see them on the 1881   Grin

Hello again

Looked up the 1881 census , it states that Thomas was born in Chitiwynd? is that the same as Chetwynd or a different place?

Thanks

Hello Bezlev

Welcome to Rootschat from me too!  Smiley

Mum44 has just gone out but will post the other census shortly.  Meanwhile I've found Thomas in 1861 census for you.  The 1881 census image does show Chetwynd.  Sometimes you'll find lots of spelling variations (or just plain mistakes!) on census transcriptions and other documents.  Did you find Simon in 1881 - a patient in Shrewsbury Infirmary?

1861 census: ref RG9 piece 1895 folio 141 page 5
Farm House, Cheswardine, Chipnall, Shropshire
in household of George Bend, Miller & Farmer

Thomas Wilcox  servant unmarried 20  Carter   b. Chitywynd, Salop

Will have a look for him earlier.  Wonder when Mary came over from America?
It would be a good idea, as Mum44 said, to get one of the children's birth certs to find her maiden name.

Kind regards, Barbara   Smiley

Thankyou Barbara

Yes looks like I need a birth certificate to find out her maiden name.

Thankyou for all your help. Again is Chipnall different from Shifnal?

Hi Beryl,

Yes, Chipnall is about 1 mile from Cheswardine

Have you ever used genuki?  It's very good if you're not sure where places are

Here's Thomas in 1851, sadly not with parents:

1851 HO107/1996  Folio  409  Page  5
Lightwood, Hinstock, Shropshire
Philip ROSTER        head  widr 49  Labourer  Shropshire Drayton
Thomas WILLCOX servant       11 Errand Boy     "    Chetwynd

This may be the family in 1841 but you'll need that marriage cert (if we can find it), to show Thomas' father's name and occupation to confirm this or otherwise

1841 HO107/ 899/ 3 folio 41 page 13
Hopshort, Soudley, Cheswardine, Shropshire

WILLCOCKS
Henry       25  Ag. Lab
Elizabeth  25
Henry         6
Thomas     2
John        11 months
all born in Shropshire
