Hello Ramani. Here are two headstone inscriptions:-

In loving memory of Elizabeth Jane, beloved wife of George Mangles, who died 3/September/1942 aged 66 years.
Also the above George Mangles, who died 18/June/1954 aged 75 years.

In loving memory of Frederick, beloved husband of Maria Mangles, who died October/1/1895? aged 66? years.
There is in brackets something that reads:- Huh?? Tavern North Bitchburn?
Today North Bitchburn is now named North Beechburn

That second gravestone was a good gravestone but the letters and numbers were erroded making them difficult to read.

There are two Mangles names on the war memorial one is
Mangles F and the other Mangles J. W.

Thanks Adamand

I don't know who Fred is but I will now try and find out.

The war memorial ones will be Frank Mangles d. 1 July 1916 in France and John William Mangles d. 28 Sep 1916 in France.

Hi Adam

For my daughters history degree she has to trace her family history. A lot of them lived Hunwick, Oakenshaw, Willillington e.t.c. Would it be possible to look on your inscriptions in that area for any Longstaff, Martin or Bell names please Smiley

Hello Lindamm. Here is the inscription for Longstaff at Hunwick:-

Sacred to the memory of
   Thomas Longstaff,
      of Hunwick,
Who died August 10th 1879
       aged 37 years.
Also Francis, son of the above
  Who died April 26th 1877
        aged 9 months.
Also Jane wife of the above
Who died September 19th 1909
        aged 65 years.
Also Hannah Lax
sister of the above
Who died February 10th 1900
       aged 52 years.

As for the other names, you can have the by all means.
What you will have to do is go to the relevent posting and request the on that page.
It makes things very complicated if inscriptions for different churchyards are  all put in to one churchyard entry (ie Willington on the Hunwick site)
If you go to the first posting on each subject you will see a list of surnames.
You can then check to see if the surname you are researching  are among them.
Read the posting requests to make sure they have not been requested before.
I have posted the surnames for twenty three graveyards. All you have to do is  google "M inscriptions Brancepeth" or M Inscriptions followed by the place name that you require.
I mention Brancepeth because Oakenshaw burials could be either Willington or Brancepeth.

I can't make a connection to any of the names that have been mentioned in this discussion but the all of the family names Longstaff, Barrass and Bell occur in my family history. I am a Longstaff so that name tends to dominate what I have collected thus far but if we can find some common ancestors each of us can expand the range of our knowledge of our history. You can see some of what I've collected at http://www.longstaff.info. Please feel free to contact me if you find any connection.

Hi Adam

???Can you tell me where the info comes from as the date and age for Charles either Janes husband or son do not fit with other info I have researched. Janes husband died in 1885 and his funeral was reported in the paper as he was 96 and Charles their son died aged 65 in 1895.

The dates for Jane & Joseph are right, but the other is odd.

Clipping for Charles husband of Jane:
Northern Echo  Tuesday, February 17, 1885.
"Yesterday at Hunwick church the remains of Mr Charles Scurr, of Roughlea Farm, were interred in the presence of many friends and neighbours. The deceased had reached the great age of ninty six years.".

Hello Sharon. I have altered the inscription. The reason I made the mistake was because I posted the Hunwick on the Willington page and made a cock up of the change over.
The inscription is now correct.
