COMPLETED: 1901: Richard Broom (& family?), East Ham
« on: Friday 27 June 08 21:00 BST (UK) »

Looking for any information on Richard Broom and his extended family if any.

He was a school teacher in Bromley-by-Bow in 1881 but by 1901 had moved to East Ham (I think was in West Ham in 1891). In 1881 he was lving with Clara Price as his 'wife' but there's an 1884 Poplar marriage of Richard Broom to Elizabeth Hubbard or Florence Andrews - and no trace of any marriage to Clara Price. Richard was born in Bromley-by-Bow but his parents were from Exeter so any evidence of a Devon connection would be useful confirmation (in 1881 his grandmother was living with him, but as she was born in 1794, unlikely still to be around in 1901!).

Should add - Richard was born 1855. He also had two sisters Augusta born 1856 and Elizabeth born 1859, both unmarried in 1881 though likely both married by 1901.

Many thanks for any info.

- Stephen

Many thanks - brilliant - and 1891 too!

Even the visitors fit: Richard's father William Broom had been a tailor's packer, and his uncle Joseph Nattriss had been a tailor.

thanks a lot.

indeed so - found their marriage in 1895 in Holborn.

Odd, George was Kicks there too, not Hicks !

Thanks again - this really sorts out that branch of the family. Richard Broom was a first cousin of my great-grandfather Mark Nattriss, about the same age, and both were teachers.

As Elizabeth didn't marry until 1895, he would have been registered as Broom rather than Hicks or Kicks. The one that looks most likely was Charles Henry, born q2 1890 in Camberwell. Right place, slightly wrong age. Other possible was Charles George born q2 1893 Wandsworth. Not too far away. It's possible of course that both are correct, and the first one died in infancy.

Anyway, many thanks, Carole, for your help. I shall pass all this information on to a second cousin who is writing biographies of some of the Nattriss family - he has a lot of family papers that I haven't seen yet, though I doubt if he has much if anything about these Broom cousins.

all the best !
