Hmm - its a bit strange before that cos I found

In 1871 Samuel is an umarried lodger (miner) in Tibshelf with the Barefoot family

so where did Emma and the older kids come from?

Hi Debbie

How sure are you of the marriage to Emma ?

could it be that you have the wrong wife for him & these are the wrong family entirely?

Hi Judy - I didn't say about the marriage - that was Beryl (th op)

yesterday Jamjo found this 1851

Is this him in 1851 in Donington Le Heath
    HO107 / 2084 / 700 /  29

Charles Shaw head age 44 b Hugglescote occ shoe maker
Hannah wife age 39 b Hugglescote
John son age 20 b Hugglescote occ coal miner
Henry son age 16 b Hugglescote occ coal miner
William son age 14 b Hugglescote occ coal miner
Samuel son age 10 b Donnington
Henrietta dau age 7 b Donington

                       Sue

and Mike found them in 1841 - I can only see 1 Samuel in the later census who fits a birth circ 1840 in Donnington le heath

- and I am struggleing to find an Emma in any year prior to 1881 who looks like she could be the same person - odd

 Undecided

Hi Deb

Sorry about that I meant Beryl, not you  Shocked

Yes I too am struggling to make sense of this one, as you say there appears to be only the one Samuel around that ties in ..but the 1871 is a question mark for sure?Huh?

OK - I think !

That the two boys (I don't know about Eliza) are not Samuel's  and I think their surname should be Lander.  The only likly looking Albert in other census years is called Lander - he is in the workhouse in 1871.  On Free BMD there is a reg for the birth of Albert Lander in 1863 and Thomas Henry Lander in 1865,  Market Bosworth Reg Dist which covers Markfield.  There is also a marriage in 1863 of Charles Lander and one of the Wife options is Emma Roper.  I have found the Roper family in 1861 in Markfield

1861

Thos Roper 53  unable to work born Mountsorrel
Mary Roper 49  born Thornton
Emma Roper 17  born Groby
Clare Roper 8
Hannah Roper 5
Mary Grimbley 26  visitor
Thimodling Grimbley 28  visitor

So Emma's details do seem to tie up with the Emma who is with Samuel in 1881 and 1891,  however I don't know what happened to Charles Lander (Emmas husband) and I can't see that Emma & Samuel ever actually married

Beryl - I am not sure if this helps or not,  I have now found what I think is Eliza's birth registered as Eliza Lander

Births Dec 1872
LANDER  Eliza     Ashby De La Zouch  7a 101

If it is her then Samuel & Emma did not marry,  I suspect Emmas husband was still alive

Yes - I see what you mean Beryl,  she certainly married as Eliza Shaw,  and was most likely Samuels daughter,  but I can't find a birth registration for her as Shaw or a marriage for Samuel & Emma.  I just thought you might need to know
