Baptism, Marriage & Death - GRAHAM
« on: Saturday 28 June 08 13:56 BST (UK) »

I have been searching Scotlands People for ancesters of my uncle Alexander GRAHAM (born 1912). I have all the information going back to his great grandfather Alexander GRAHAM who was born about 1825. The birth date I worked out from his census records. I have all the census records info from 1841 to 1901.

Alexander's location throughout the census records is in Ross & Cromarty, except 1861 where he was living in Wester Ord. Unfortunately, I am unable to locate his baptism record (abt.1825), his marriage record (abt.1844) and his death record (after 1901).

If anyone can help me to locate the records, or have any other ideas/suggestions on how I can locate them, I would much appreciate it.

Hi  Smiley

You don't say whereabouts in Ross and Cromarty he was. This might help us to  with a birth/marriage/death  search. Also who did marry?

Regards

Sorry. He married Ann Ross.

On the census records he was located in:
1841 - Batblair, Fearn
1851 - Peddieston, Cromarty
1861 - Wester Ord (I believe this is near Aberdeen)
1871 - High Street, Rosskeen
1881 - South Side, Rosskeen
1891 - North Side, Rosskeen
1901 - Clyde Street, Rosskeen

All the census records say he was born in Logie Easter.

The 1861 census has them in Wester Ord, parish of Rosskeen.

I've not found any bMDs for him yet but,  according to daughter Alexandrina's birth registration, they were married January 16 1850 at Rosskeen. This might not be in the registers if they were not married by a Ch of Scotland minister. Scottishlaw recognised various types of marriage.

first son was Finlay and second daughter was Janet so it might be worth looking for these names as parents of Alexander.

I'll do some more looking around.

The IGI has a birth 9th October 1823, Logie Easter, Alexander Graham. Parents Simon Graham and Janet Chisholm.

I noticed on at least one of the censuses that his birthdate was circa 1823. This is an extracted record so it is very reliable.

On the IGI I found Alexander GRAHAM 1825 Logie-Easter, but it has no parents or spouse mentioned.

I think that that was a patron submission, Osserick, and not to be treated as fact- and very often wishful thinking on the part of the submitter. The only one in the OPRs is the 1823 one(as Ghram)

I've found this entry which is quite interesting. it might be an elder brother or father and second wife. Note the Fin(dl)ay :
1841 Logie Easter:
77 ED 4 Page 13

Simon Graham, 40-44, Ag lab
Ann, 36
Finlay, 10
William,8,
Andrew, 6
Sarah, 4
Isabella, 1
Archibald Fraser, 30, ag lab

All b. Ross & Cromarty

Simon Graham and Anne Ross are down as the parents of Finlay Graham, bpt. 4 Oct 1830, Logie Easter.

Nothing for Simon Graham  and Janet Chisholm after the bpt of Alexander in  1823.

On the 1841 census for Batblair, Fearn, I found:

Finlay GRAHAM - 60
Isabel - 55
Andrew - 25
Janet - 23
Alexander - 15
Betsy - 6

The Alexander being the one I'm trying to find.

Is it possible that Finlay & Isabel are the parents of Andrew who married Janet and their child is Betsy. Alexander being the brother of Andrew? Or, do all the children belong to Finlay & Isabel?

You'd have to follow them all up to find out or check OPRs.

Alexander would be 15-19. The 1841 rounded down to 5 year age groupings for those 15 and over.

Are you sure that this is your Alexander? Have you checked that there isn't another one on the 1851?  The Finlay looks promising.

Where did his children live around 1901 - I can't see anything for his death and wonder if he  went to live with one of them.

I haven't tried a full wild card search yet  Smiley

I think I will have to follow them all up to sort out the links.

I believe this is the correct 1841 census record for Alexander but I'm not 100%.

Ther is one other that might be a possibility:

Donald Graham - 30
Ann Baine - 30
Alexr Graham - 14
David Graham - 10

The civil parish being Resolis in the county of Ross & Cromarty.

If they were not married by a church of Scotland minister and are not in the registers, is there any records that might show their marriage?

There might be Kirk Sessions Minutes or they might have been Roman Catholic (not too good on those records) . Otherwise,  they could declare in front of witnesses and this would be accepted as a mariage in Scots Law or........
