1871 Census Wolverhampton
« on: Saturday 28 June 08 17:44 BST (UK) »

Please is there anyone who could look up 1871 Census record for James BOWERS and Annie Amelia Bowers with son George Edward. (b.1866) They were living at Bilston Rd, Wolverhampton in 1866 but though I have tried Ancestry.com I cannot seem to find them at all.  Any help much appreciated.

Yes thanks I have 1881 and I made a mistake it is Amelia not Annie Amelia.
Think it must be the indexes to 1871 that are lacking as there seems no sign of them.  Anyhow thanks for looking.  If anyone else can look say in Wolverhampton itself where they may have the films, or Stafford RO would appreciate any information.

Don't think it's an ancestry problem.   Have just looked on findmypast and no sign of them on there either.

Many thanks Annette and Willow.  Good to have the marriage but am still amazed at lack of 1871 Census even if Staffs not put in on Ancestry they are still illusove.  Would be glad to solve it.

If the 1865 groom is a boatman, then they could both be on the canals just about anywhere in '71.

Hiya Graham

I cant find them at all in 1871

But from the 1881 census did you notice William Stanley stepson?

In fact all the Bowers are proving hard to find. Off FreeREG there are the following siblings for James all baptised St Peters

Salley 5.1.1834
Thomas 11.8.1830
John 12.12.1827
Emily Homer 9.4.1824
Ann 10.9.1821

I have found Thomas his father in 1851 but cant see him in the 1841

Thomas 62 Head b Wolverhampton carriers porter
Sarah 58 wife b Wolverhampton
Sally 16 dau b Wolverhampton house servant

just to add that I can't spot them either   Cry

Has anyone found Amelia Stanley prior to marriage?

1881 has a William Stanley 19 yrs step son (born about 1862) and a Charlotte Stanley 12 yrs niece.
According to this census she is born abt 1835.
On her marriage on Free Reg she is 20 yrs in 1865 - b abt 1845.
1891 b abt 1837
1901 b abt 1833 and they have Violet Stanley 6 yrs grandchild with them.

addendum
would appreciate a second opinion
1861 RG9; Piece: 2135; Folio: 56; Page: 11
Enoch Hanley with wife Amelia - there is a 2 month old Willie plus others though. Can't find them after  and they do look as if it could be Stanley. The 'S' for Stanley and 'Smith' in occupation is same.
They are living Birmingham but there are some deaths for Enoch Stanley and a marriage 1853 with a possible bride Amelia Partrirdge- would have to be verified.

Hello Heywood
I can tell you Amelia Stanley was a widow when she married James Bowers.
Her maiden name was Partridge.

Hi everyone,
yes I saw her as a servant- I thought she had fibbed a bit on her marriage but not so! She just admitted to being of full age.  Wink

So wherever they are in 1871- none of us can find them. I am sure that between us we have tried all variations - odd though!

The more you look at this ... Huh
Willow and Jackie have a baptism 1830.
marriage in 1865 - he is 26 yrs (Willow) making him born c1839
1881 census - James is 42 yrs b 1839.

Has anyone got him in 1861? Is this him?

1861 RG9; Piece: 1996; Folio: 63; Page: 20  (transcribed as Bonen)
Gt Chapel Street Wolverhampton
James Bowers (looks like that) stepson 22 yrs blacksmith b Wolverhampton
there is also a James and a Thomas

(parents are Thomas and Mary Ann Beaumont)

Just checked they are not at 26 Pountney Street -as in 1881

last thing- if he was blacksmith- the canal horses would need blacksmiths so he could still be travelling around.
best wishes
