Hi

I have a copy of Tenants no More, a book which gives details of letters to and from the various families of Geashill to their relatives abroad, during the mid 1800s.

There is mention of the Booth family and the tradition of them being teachers.  The names Esther, Joseph and George crop up.   The earliest mention is of a George Booth, a Parish Clerk and teacher in Westport, Co Mayo, who married Jane Dane, also a teacher in 1811.   This couple had 7 children, Esther being the second.  Esther married William Stewart in January 1851 - when she would have been about 27.  Joseph was her brother.

Does this ring any bells?

Cheers

Thanks for your information, I will pass on to the Booths.
I am sure they were farmers, got the below from Griffiths Valuation 1848 -1864
Barony of Geashill
 The Estate of Earl Digby continued
Killderry (Killelery]
> Robt Clary, Mrs Ruth Boothe, Joseph Booth, 2s 6d each
> John Hues [Hughes], Mick Aspells, Margaret Carey, 6d each
> John Blageroff [Blagrave], William Mahon, John Kelly 2s each
> Charles Kelly 1s 6d;
> Art Dunne, Maryanne Aspell, Thomas Kuskilo (Cuskelly), John Odlum, 1s
each;
> John Hannigan, 4d.
> Total -£1 Is 10d.

Mrs Booth can’t remember the name of the farm but remembers the name of a local neighbour as Daniel O’Brien or O’Brian.

Lance

Hi Im new to Rootschat but I was wondering about the book that was mentioned by some of the posters, Tenants No More. Would it be possible that someone could have a look through theres and see if there is any mention in the letters of the families (or in the index) to the landlord (s) of the places around Geashill where they left, or any mention about land agents who administered the land and who would have collected the rent. I searched online for the book and the cheapest copy I can get is $121.Thanks and good luck searching to all of you!

Hi

Yes, you are correct re the Digby landlord.

Yes, there are Tarletons (I've seen their headstones there too) but there are no Warburtons.

Hi

Can't remember if I ever responded to your query re Geashill land agents.  The author of Tenants No More states, on page 122:-

"Trench was the land agent who succeeded Tarleton and carried out the breaking of leases instigated by the new landlord, Lord Digby, after Earl Digby died."

There is reference to a Mr Robert Tarleton "Agricultural Agent" on page 83.  On page 102, there is mention of "Robert Tarleton, the landlord's agricultural agent."

Hope this helps.  I am fascinated to know why you are gathering this information and would LOVE to know more.

Cheers
