Griffiths family.
« on: Sunday 29 June 08 12:29 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know of a place called The Brookhouse in Selattyn? I think it used to be a farm in the early 1900s and maybe had a dairy attached. Did the Griffithses live here or own it. I hear it is still standing, has it changed name as I cannot find no trace of it.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

It still exists! If you go to www.royalmail.co.uk and do a postcode search - entering Brookhouse and Selattyn, it will come up with a postcode and a map*  Smiley

I had ancestors in that areas - Jones  Sad  but they had married Griffiths from Whittington earlier on!  If you need help with your Shropshire Griffiths, just ask  Smiley

It could be on Denbighshire,  William.

I'll do a global search!

Hi Gadget,
I have been trying to trace a Margaret Griffiths for months on another site without success. Someone found one but the dob did'nt match, it was out by a year, should be 1885 not 86. There were about 13 siblings and a couple tied up with what I have. It does'nt matter what I type in i.e. Denbighshire, Oswestry, Salop, Shropshire, I can't even get the info what the other person got. I know she was born on the date above and died in 1972, married a William Jones in 1910 and then lived in Chirk. Known siblings are Ann, Jim or James, George.
The Griffiths family found by the other person was on the 1891 census but they could'nt be found on the 1901 and I know that they always lived around the Chirk, Selattyn area.

Hi nummy

I know the area well - was born and brought up there  Smiley

Do you know who Margaret's parents were?

I'll have a look to see if I can find anything.

Well, I've got a marriage reference:

Margaret Griffiths and William Jones, Sept quarter, 1910, Oswestry Reg. District, vol 6a, page 1477

If you got this, it would tell you her parents' names. I'll check the censuses now.

Hi,
Just read the mess from the Robert's family regarding Brookhouse Farm. Can't understand why I have lots of old pics showing relatives and Farm when another family were there with a different name. Margaret used to spend alot of time there with family.

There was a Brookhouse Cottage and an area called Brooklands as well.  Do you think she might have been friends with one of the Brookhouse farm family?

I've found a little mention of Brookhouse in my copy of A History of the Parishes of St Martin's and Weston Rhyn by C Neville Hurdsman, 2003, Bridge Books, Wrexham:

Quote
The nearby Brookhouse gives it's name to a stone built road bridge of 1795, constructed to accommodate the changes brought about by the canal. At first sight it is astonishing to find an triple arched bridge with it's centre piers protected by cutwaters.....
