Just to complete David's stay in Scotland, here they are in 1881:

160 High Street, Castle Douglas
869 ED 2 Household No.42

Isabella Williamson, 36, Laundress, b.New Abbey
David, 12, scholar, b. Castle Douglas

Uncle/brother John:

7 Glen Road, Buittle
859 ED 2 Household No. 59

a boarder in with William Halliday:

John Williamson, 25, Engine(stationary) driver, b. Kelton

I wonder if this was an influence on  David's future career?

No real sighting of Thomas  Undecided

It appears to be Conolly:

Margaret Williamson died 18 January 1869, King Street, Castle Douglas, aged 43. Widow of John Williamson, horse breaker. Parents - David Conolly, tailor (dec)  and <unknown>. Cause - chronic laryngitis. Informant - John Williamson, son.

So your David might have been named for his maternal great grandfather  Smiley

Reviewing the thread:

This looks like the family in 1861

King Street, Castle Douglas
869 ED 1 Household No. 26

John Williamson, 34, Horse Breaker, b. Tynron
Margaret, 36, b. New Abbey
Isabella, 17, b. New Abbey
John, 7, b. Castle Douglas
Thomas Easton, Grandson, 1, b. Castle Douglas
James Cornelia, 26,servant, b. Buittle

I'm thinking that Thomas Easton is probably the Thomas Williamson in the 1871.

and:

1851

Ingliston, New Abbey
877 ED 2 Page 14

David Connal, 58, Tailor, b. Troqueer
Jane, 55, b. Keir, Dumfriesshire
Jane, dau, 14, b. New Abbey
Isabella Easton,grddaughter,  7, b. New Abbey
Mary Jamieson, grddau, 3, b. New Abbey

The Easton name again!

I'd put my money on Isabella, David's mother being the daughter of Margaret Connell(y) and an unknown Easton.

So what we have is Margaret Connell(y) b. 1820 or circa 1826 to David Connell and Agnes Ireland
Isabella b. to Margaret circa (as Easton but became Williamson when John and Margaret married)
David b. to Isabella 1868/9

It was quite common for children to take their father's name whether their parents were married or not - and to change that name if their mother took a new partner.

And, as promised, some more views of King Street:

By the way, they have a very good, but small, local studies library and the staff are very helpful  Smiley

He's still in Staffordshire in 1901

60 Smithfield Chapel (?), Horninglow, Burton on Trent, Derby/Staffs
RG13/2646 Folio 83 Page 27

Boarding with William Proudman:

David Williamson, boarder, 32, Engineer (?), b. Scotland

Just had a look at this 1901 Burton census and can clear up the Smithfield Chapel?  address.  The first entry on the page is for the Smithfield Hotel, Derby Street, Horninglow.   David Williamson is lodging at 60 Victoria Road.

Hope that has clarified it anyway.

Thanks Claire - I read the -do- and checked the top of the page   Smiley

I think that amccd seems to have the Burton end sorted though. It's the KKD family that is the real interest.

Thank you Judy  Smiley

Sadly,  the book's very boring and not at all about Galloway  Sad

It is about how to do research though  Cheesy

How's your research going?
