Hi everyone,
My great grand father was born in King Street on 14th march 1869. His name was David Williamson.
I have a copy of his birth certificate which was obtained by someone in the family in 1924.
His mother Isabella Williamson was working as a housekeeper and hers is the only name on the certificate but I have read(somewhere) that copies only have the mothers name on them.
I am not sure if Isabella was married or not,so I have not been able to get any definite leads on her. If she was unmarried then there is an Isabella living in St michaels street Dumfries in 1851 age 16 whose father was called David who could be her
Any help would be appreciated

Hi
Here's an interesting entry on the 1871 census:
King Street, Castle Douglas, Kelton 869 ED 2 Household No. 87
John Williamson, 16, skinner, b. Kelton Isabella Williamson, sister, 25, Housekeeper, b. New Abbey, KKD Thomas, nephew, 10, b. Kelton David, nephew, 2, b. Kelton
Kelton was the parish in which Castle Douglas was.

The only birth/bpt showing for Isabella that I can see at the moment is:
18 March 1847, Tongland to Dugald S Williamson and Julia Curwen Stanley
Not sure about this I'll check the earlier censuses and brother John.

This looks like the family in 1861
King Street, Castle Douglas 869 ED 1 Household No. 26
John Williamson, 34, Horse Breaker, b. Tynron Margaret, 36, b. New Abbey Isabella, 17, b. New Abbey John, 7, b. Castle Douglas Thomas Easton, Grandson, 1, b. Castle Douglas James Cornelia, 26,servant, b. Buittle
I'm thinking that Thomas Easton is probably the Thomas Williamson in the 1871.

Hi, thank you very much, it is very interesting and not what I was expecting!!!!
What was David doing in Margate I wonder? This is not what I have been told by my mother who believed her grandfather left Scotland and arrived in the Midlands to build a bridge!!
This info will keep me busy for a while.
much appreciated

if you'd like Isabella's death cert, send me a PM

In 1891, he was in Staffordshire:
60 Victoria Road, Horninglow (?), Burton on Trent RG12/2204 Folio 135 Page 10
in the home of William Proudman, a brewer's labourer:
David Williamson, boarder, 22, Engine Fitter, b. Kirkcubrightshire
He likely travelled around as an engine fitter

That makes perfect sense as Burton (Horninglow) is exactly where he should be!!!
But the mystery deepens as I have just re discovered a copy of his marriage certificate which my grandma(his daughter) gave to me and on it his father is named as David Williamson-deceased-engine fitter which complicates things.
Once again many thanks

He's still in Staffordshire in 1901
60 Smithfield Chapel (?), Horninglow, Burton on Trent, Derby/Staffs RG13/2646 Folio 83 Page 27
Boarding with William Proudman:
David Williamson, boarder, 32, Engineer (?), b. Scotland
I wouldn't worry too much about father's name on marriage cert. My granddad, b. illegitimate, also put his own name for father on his marriage cert. He might have been embarrassed or who knows
Thinking about the Margate address - could he have put that in case he thought he might have been liable for anything - just speculation

Thanks for all of this, I would love to see some more photos, a scottish friend of mine did say it was the posh bit of scotland!!!!
David Williamson continued to live in Burton, dying in 1950. He married in1901 and the address on the marriage certificate is 60 victoria rd, dont know what the chapel address is.
Have looked up Thomas Easton on IGI and his mother is named as Isabella Easton which might need further research.

I'll dig out the photos later tonight - going to cook now. Castle Douglas is a lovely town - really worth a visit if you can.
I'm just thinking that Isabella's mother, Margaret, might have been and Easton and Isabella could have been an Easton. Again, worth checking. I'll have a look at this later on as well.
What fun families we have
