Hi Ewan
On 6 Apr 1841 Daniel Pitt was being held at the County Gaol, Fisherton Anger, awaiting orders having been sentanced to 14 years transportation for horse stealing at the Wiltshire Lent Assizes. Unfortunately no further records are held in Wiltshire.
Records of the Assizes and individual trials are kept at the National Archives at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Cheers Dave

Hi Ewan, if the accused was tried at the Quarter Sessions then the records are kept in Wiltshire and are available to view. However your man was tried at the Assizes, the higher court, and court records are only available through the Archives.
Give me a few days and I'll have a look and see if the trial was reported in the local newspaper, but not all were covered.
Cheers Dave

Hi Ewan,
I had a look in the Salisbury and Winchester Jounal and the account of the Wiltshire Assizes at Salisbury appeared in their issue dated 8 March 1841.
The Assizes opened the previous Monday, 1 March 1841, and it was reported that 86 prisoners were for trial. Unfortunately your man, Daniel Pitt, did not warrant an account, most being devoted to a big murder trial and various assaults and burglaries. He only appeared in the sentencing summaries after one death sentence, a number of life transportations, a few transportations for 15 years then 'Transported for 14 years Daniel Pit(sic), John Jenner and Geo Dubben'.
Sorry there wasn't more, Dave
