Hi,
I have details of a James NOTTINGHAM of Aylesbury, who was transported to Maryland in 1755 onboard the Sloop TRYAL, for 8 years hard labour - for receiving stolen money in relation to horses.
I have good reason to believe that in 1758 he did a runner and never finished his sentence - probably staying in the USA.
I am trying to find records of convicts in such colonies and who employed them, records of what happened when they finished their employment etc etc - if, indeed, such records exist ..
I have researched official Maryland Archives - as much as i can online..and have emailed them for advice ..but sadly no reply.!
If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated.
regards

Hi Paul, this may not be the best venue for your kind research. Requires academic resources perhaps ??
This reference comes from the Maryland State Archives -- maybe what you already found and doesn't appear to be researchable on-line. News didn't exactly travel fast if your guy escaped captivity in 1758
1776? SCOTT, JOHN DAY. Description of deserter John Nottingham. MSA S 989-1640, MdHR 4573-44 1 /6 /4 /5.
http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/stagser/s1400/s1484/html/ssu1484.html
1790 Census shows five Nottinghams -- but this is 32 years later so who knows if he could still be alive
Eleanor Charles, MD Bennet St Marys, MD Phillip St Marys, MD Margaret Marbletown, Ulster, NY Stephen New Marlborough, Ulster, NY
Googling didn't find anything specific to your James Nottingham but there are lots of books/articles on the subject of convict labor in the early America. Convict and slave labor was the fuel for the Plantation economy. I would assume what happened to these individuals varies greatly.
Sorry couldn't be of more help but maybe someone else will have helpful information. A reply (even if useless!!) at least keeps the post at the top of the board!!
