John AYLWARD, aged 21 in 1851 census, was born Billingshurst. His father had died. Was John baptised there, and if so do PRs give father's name, please? (John was greatgrandfather of Gladys AYLWARD, the missionary in China portrayed by Ingrid Bergman in "Inn of the Sixth Happiness.")
Thanks, Samueller.

Hi Samueller, What a small world I remember vividly Gladys Aylward coming to our school in South London during the 60's & giving a very inspirational speech. I've got a photo somewhere in an old school mag should you like a copy. Ok, good news & bad news. John Aylward is not on the IGI ( in fact the whole of Billingshurst is not included) but he's on the 1841 census minus his father who obviously passed away before 1841;
Billingshurst HO107/1092/ bk 2/8/10
Mary Aylward 40 JOHN 11 Edward 7 Walter 4 All born Sussex.
There is a Peter Hurd who is offering to do parish record look-ups for Billingshurst on the Sussex Look-up Exchange http://homepage.ntlworld.com/w.jowett/sussexlookup.html I'm sure he'll find something. I can only find one marriage on the Sussex Marriage Index involving a Mary in Slinfold which is next door to Billingshurst;
Slinfold, West Sussex, 9 Aug 1818: James AYLERD, bach Mary KNIGHT, sp botp (B) Witness wit: Danl. & Eliz. PERYER
So there's a possibility his father was James.
An interesting marginal note here. Elizabeth Peryer was more than likely Mary's sister as I found this marriage;
Rudgwick, West Sussex, 25 Oct 1814: Daniel PERYER, bach Elizabeth KNIGHT, sp botp (B) wcop Witness wit; Wm.JOHNSON; [Jas.MITCHENER]

Hi Jane and Hi Jane, Very many thanks to you both. I look forward to hearing from you again Jan in due course. I do have photos of Gladys, thanks Jane. In fact they are what aroused my interest. She looks remarkably like my grandmother Edith Emma AYLWARD, who was of equally small stature, indomitable character and unshakeable Christian faith, though I never knew her as she died in 1929, aged 78. If there is a genetic connection it must be a fairly distant one because my AYLWARD ancestors came from the Hampshire/Dorset border and had lived there for generations. Thanks again, Sam.

Hi Jane, The short answer to your question is 'Yes.' When I started researching I had hoped and expected to discover that Gladys and my grandmother were at least second cousins! Now I have become interested in Gladys's ancestors regardless of a possible link. Thanks again.
Sam
PS. Apologies to Jan for error in your name in my previous message.

I haven't forgotten this - had a quick squint in the Billingshurts PR's today but couldn't see John. Will recheck and also look in Slinfold soon.

Thanks Jan, much appreciated. I have now discovered that my own AYLWARD line moved to Corhampton, Hants from East Dean, Sussex early in C18, so a link with Gladys's line is now slightly more likely than I previously thought.
Sam.
