Look up Request 1851 Ann Reed
« on: Sunday 29 June 08 23:51 BST (UK) »

I would like information on the following please - It is No. 78 on the Census Schedule:
Ann Reed, Head, Aged 38, Helen Reed, Daughter, Aged 14, James Reed, Brother and William Graddon, Nephew Aged 10 - all born Basingstoke.  I have seen a copy of the census record but cannot read the Parish name and would like to confirm the occupations of those named.

Many thanks

I have lived in the area for 20 years and never heard of Flaxpool!

I can't see it in the Phillimore Parish Atlas - so possibly not an actual parish.

It was probably a road sometimes also known as Flaxfield, leading from Church St. in the town onto the Salisbury Road.  This is from a record dated 1911, and of course the town has been totally redeveloped in the last 30 years  Cheesy

Many thanks everyone for the info.  I thought it looked like Flaxpool but also had never heard of it - we live quite near Basingstoke.  It is young William Graddon who I am researching.  I think his father (Edward Graddon) had just died so he went to stay with his aunt Ann.  How do you know she is unmarried ?  What page ref. is that please.

Thanks

Just an update.  I have looked further and see the following from a webiste about Flaxfield Road:
By 1850, the first road was built called Flexpool Street, which was later renamed Flaxfield Road.
Well done !
Thanks

If you look in a History of Basingstoke by Arthur Attwood it referers Flaxpool. Onlu looked briefly at the book ine Winchester records office so don't have many details. am goingto try and see if it is still available. Seems to be the definitive guide on all things basingstoke.
