Millingtons from Ocker Hill/ Bilston
« on: Monday 30 June 08 03:25 BST (UK) »

Looking for family of Matthew Millington who was born circa 1829 at Ocker Hill, Staffordshire and probably bapt in Bilston in 1830. (He was transported as a convict to VDL in 1851. Went by the name of William in later years.)

His father was William Millington and his mother Sarah Mole. He had brothers Thomas and William and a sister Mary all at native place.  I know they are in the 1851 census but I can't find my original notes detailing this. Sarah died sometime in early 1830's and William remarried a Letitia Pearson. They are still alive in 1881 and living at Eckington, Derby. William is aged 73 and his native place is given as Diffield,Stafford.

I can't seem to find a place called Diffield in Staffordshire?? Can anyone point me in the right direction or is it a mis- spelling of another name?

Regards,

Well I did find a Matthew Millington in 1851 as a prisoner born at Hoker Hill, Staffordshire, England about 1831...he's 20. He's being held at the Portland Convict Prison, Dorset. I can't read his profession and then someone has written iron.

Ok I found him with Letitia in 1871 - he's a furnace man in the iron works- same place as 1881 and he gives his place of birth as Birley Hill, Staffordshire....it looks like Birley Hill but it's possibly Barley Hill.

So I found them in 1861 living in Dronfield, Derbyshire and his birth place is now Stourbridge, Staffordshire. My OH does have rellies from Stourbridge but I don't know the area well...maybe Diffield was a local neighbourhood  in the day Huh

William - Head - age 55 - furnace keeper
Letitia - wife - age 60 - born Bilston, Staffordshire

Letitia has been consistent with her birth place.

Hiya both

Barley Hill = Brierley Hill
Kingswingfoot = Kingswinford

Both these are in the Dudley/Sedgley area

I'm going to have to have a think on Diffield though?!

Hiya Mab and Peter

I wonder of Diffield is Wednesfield and the enumerator misheard? but thats more the other side of Wolverhampton than Dudley. There is a Lanesfield which isn't to far from Ocker Hill which seems like a better bet

There is a Driffield but thats North Humberside and how on earth did you work out that the scribble on that page reads Letitia?! - she lists her place of birth as Bradley which is in Bilston

Hiya Peter

On FreeREG there are also the following baptisms all at St Leonards Bilston for William and Letitia

Mary 8.10.1837
Selina 6.11.1833

and for William and Sarah

Matthew 7.11.1830
Thomas 20.7.1828
Joseph 18.2.1827

There are also for parents William and Martha?!

William 12.12.1824
Anne 7.11.1819

And even more interesting is that on Josephs its noted that they live in Highfield Sedgley

William and Martha live Lanesfield Sedgley (Anne) and Highfield Sedgley (William)

They married 21.6.1819 at St Peters

There's an area (of Bilston or close by) called Deepfield.

Sometimes given as place of abode on christening/burial records as well as occasionally on census pages.
