To mab, Willow and Dudley,
Thankyou very much for your responses . Strange that William Millington kept changing his birthplace from one census to the next and yet Letty was constant with her replies ?.
I found a letter which I vaguely recall had their death dates in it. William's first wife Sarah Mole was buried at Bilston Swan Bank Weslyan Church on the 12 August 1832. She was 24.
Both William and Letitia died in 1885. William was 78 and Letty 84. Unsure where they were buried but presume Eckington ?
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter,
If my memory is correct, the 1932 death would have been right in the middle of the Bilston Cholera epidemic, so the Wesleyan burial may not indicate any religious preference. I think they just got buried a.s.a.p. in the first place available. There are lists via the Wolverhampton archives site of the cholera victims.
Sarah is on the list. [just checked]

but Willow,
at least that makes you aware of a little uncertainty.
My great-grandfather and his parents seemed quite sure that he was born in Bilston ... but it turned out to be Highfields, which is Sedgley and hence Dudley registration district.
It was only when I found the baptismal records for all the family (in Bilston, and including mother's maiden name) that I lost the nagging doubt that I had been sent the wrong birth certificate.

Hi Peter, have a look on here:-
http://www.wolverhamptonhistory.org.uk/resources/familyhistory
In particular click on Bilston Baptisms 1813-1837. There are bapts for children of William & Sarah (Matthew & Thomas) and William & Letitia (Mary & Selina) showing father's occupation and abode. There may be other Millingtons on here too if you search.

Thankyou every one for all the details. It has certainly fleshed out Mathew and his parents generation a great deal.
Matthew only mentions Mary in his convict record. I wonder why he didn't nominate Selina as a sister?? Unless she died long before his transportation.
What other resources can I access to try and work back to the next generation ie Williams birth in Sedgley or environs and the same for Sarah Mole? After a 15 year break from genealogy the hinges are quite rusty....
Cheers,
Peter
