Beacom
« on: Monday 30 June 08 05:46 BST (UK) »

Hi I am looking for the family Beacom.  Been at a dead end. I found William and Rebecca Beacom in the 1861 Scotland Census.  And a Thomas Beacom birth 1846 in Renfrewshire and  a William Beacom birth 1859 in Renfrewshire. My Great Grand Father was William and his brotherThomas  came over to USA around 1869.  The infomation I have their parents was William and Rebecca Beacom. And they had a brother Robert Beacom that married a Christina.  They had 3 children and lived in Govan, Scotland. With the name Beacom I am having alot of issues trying to put the pieces together.  Would like any help with finding my roots. Thanks   Bonnie

Hi Bonnie

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

There is a submitted entry showing for William and Rebecca's marriage in Ireland on IGI at www.familysearch.org:

WILLIAM BEACOM and REBECCA KEYS Marriage on 27 AUG 1835 iin Drumkeeran, Fermanagh, Ireland

Is this the 1861 entry you referred to:

William Beacom    50, ag. lab. b. Ireland
Rebecca Beacom    48, b. Ireland
Thomas Beacom    15, bobbin polisher, b. Ireland

Address: 18 Incle St, Abbey Burgh

There is also this family showing in Renfrewshire in 1861:

John Beacom 40, lab., b. Ireland
Susan Beacom 39, b. Ireland
Joseph Beacom 15 b. Ireland
John Beacom 6, b. Paisley
William Beacom 2, b. Paisley

Address: 10 Niddry St Back House, Paisley

I can't easily see any Beacoms in the 1851 census in Scotland - likely the families came over from Ireland after this census.

This looks to be Robert and Christina in 1881:

Robert Beacom    38, Iron Finisher Ship Yd, b. Ireland
Christina Beacom 35, b. Glasgow
Robert Beacom 9
Thomas Beacom 7
Alexander Beacom 6
William Beacom    2
Charles Campbell 25, b. Boarder

Address: 92 Queen St, Govan

And the only other Beacom family in Scotland in 1881 (that we had in 1861 headed up by John):

Susan Beacom 57
Joseph F Beacom 34
William Beacom    23
Jane Fyfe Beacom 12, granddaughter
John A Beacom 8, grandson

Address: 4 South Croft, Paisley Abbey

From the 1880 census in Michigan (www.familysearch.org), William, Rebecca and son Thomas show as living there (name down as BECOM). There are only 29 Beacoms (and variants) showing with an Irish birth place in the US census in 1880, maybe some connections there.

Thanks you so much for this information.  I am trying to put some of the names with my family tree.   I know that my great Grand father William and his brother Thomas came over to the USA about 1869. And I think they came through Canada.  But really not sure. This surname is hard to trace,  Thanks again.
