davies family
« on: Monday 30 June 08 11:51 UTC (UK) »

Hi, I'm looking for some help,  I'm looking for the  parents or family of  Moses Davies born around 1834-37 in a place called ST dogwells or ST Ogwells in Fishguard Pembrokeshire, as I cant find nothing showing him on the 1841 censers or  any records before.

I  have found him in the 1851-61-71-81-91-1901 censers

Moses  later went on to have three daughters  Mary Ann, Jane and Martha Cry sadly Martha died I found them living Llanistian, Fishguard.

He and his family later moved to aberaman in Glamorgan where he died.

Would be gratefull for any help. Smiley

Do you have his marriage certificate? If not, you should get it to find out the details of his father.
This looks like the registration
Moses Davies march qtr 1861 Haverfordwest vol 11a pg 779 with Margaret Nicholas on the same page.
Haverfordwest registration district covered Llanstinan and St Dogwells.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/StDogwells/index.html

On the 1891 census, he gave his place of birth as Welsh Hook which comes under St Dogwells  - not to be confused with St Dogmaels also in Pembs....

just double checked the IGI batch no C082941 for St Dogwells and there is a baptism for Moses David bp 17/4/1835 son of James & Margaret. The only other Moses in the batch was baptised in 1854.
Also baptised to the same parents, David bp 7/6/1829 and another David bp 8/7/1832

1841 Welsh Hook, St Dogwells HO107/1444/7 folio 18 pg 8
James David 48 farmer
Margaret 32
David 8
Morris 6
Mathias 3
Amah (?) 3 months (male)
same building separate household
Thomas David 78 minister of the gospel farming ??
Mary David 69 independent
all born in county
there's some other words in the occupation fields for Thomas & Mary that aren't very
clear

1851 Welsh Hook, St Dogwells HO107/2480 folio 258 pg 6
James Davies head mar 59 carpenter
Margaret wife 44 b. St Lawrence
David son 19 carpenter
Amos son 10
Eunice dau 5
all born St Dogwells unless otherwise stated

birth reg for Eunice
Eunice Davies dec qtr 1845 Haverfordwest vol 26 pg 567
which will give you mother's maiden name

In 1871, David, now married, and Amos are in Unity Street, Aberdare RG10/5407 folio 72 pgs 21-22. Amos moves back to Pembs, but David is still in Unity Street, Fforchaman in 1891 in the same enumeration district as Moses. RG12/4444 folio 96 pg2.

Theory looks to hold ok, but marriage cert for Moses would confirm father.

Hi Osprey,

Thanks for the information, really appreciate it, I've been looking a long time but couldn,t find anything.

I kept coming up with Margaret nicholas as his wife.  I tried to order their marriage certificate but its asking for a GRO reference index, I'm not sure what it is. I was wondering if you could help me on that please.

Hi both  Grin

hope you've ordered the marriage cert, Bramwell, and it proves to be the correct one.

Cas, that looks a good match in the parish records. I think I'm getting a bee in my bonnet about surnames for this period. It's interesting how some families add 's', but not consistently, and why?

HI both,

Certificate  has been ordered, will update u when I receive it.

I must say the two of you have really impressed me.

Have u got any advice on searching before 1837?  As over the last couple of months, I have learned how to search the census records, BMD records.

Didn't realise how addictive it can be lol  Smiley

Prior to 1837, it's parish records and wills if your families left any. The parish records are usually in the relavent county record office, so Haverfordwest for Pembrokeshire. You can find out by checking the parish on Genuki - I gave you the link in an earlier reply. They are also at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. What you get to look at is microfilms of the original records which are unindexed.  Don't know how feasible it is for you to get to either.

http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=247

http://home.clara.net/tirbach/HelpPageArchs.html#Pembrokeshire

An alternative is to use your nearest LDS centre and order microfilms of the parishes you need, if they have filmed them. The  LDS film for St Dogwells is of the Bishops Transcripts - a copy of the original, so mistakes can creep in.

If you can find the date of an event on the IGI, you can usually get copies from the record office by post. The cost varies from archive to archive, some have a minimum fee but you can get several copies for the minimum. If you don't have the date and parish of the event, you can pay a research fee, but the fees can be pretty steep.

It's always worth posting a query on the boards as some members have copies of records on disc or might be going to a record office.

Some counties like Cornwall and Dorset have online parish clerk schemes where you can access transcriptions of the parish records.

Hope some of this helps.

Hi both,

Some great advice given from Osprey, as always.... Just a few thoughts....there could be possible free 'look up' exchanges for the county you are researching.  For Pembs, this would be:

http://home.clara.net/daibevan/LookupExch/PEMdata.html#Parish

For info...I use Genuki and/or Google a lot, just type in whatever you wish to find, suprising what you will...

Also there are Family History Societies for most counties, to join for info, or if you just wish to buy parish records for that particular area etc there is no need to join.  Pembroke would come under:

http://www.dyfedfhs.org.uk/

They are listed in the hundreds, not by individual area, Dewisland Hundred would cover St Dogwells

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/Hundreds.html

Hope this helps and happy hunting

I don't know if it's the same for all family history societies, but I know from experience that Dyfed charges its subscription from the beginning of January, whenever you join. So if you join later on in the year, you don't get such good value for money.
