I have reached a brick wall with my Richard Tickner, I have him in the census for 1871, 1881 and 1891 (he died before 1901) but have had no joy before that. This is what I know...born abt 1829, Godalming Surrey, occupation- leatherdresser. He married Martha Stafford (abt1842, Bulwell Notts) in 1873 though they already had been living as married and had 3 children ( it would not surprise me if at least the eldest child was from a previous marriage though). Presumably, Richard's work took him all around the country as his children were born in, Newcastle on Tyne (abt 1863) , Linton Notts (abt 1867), Abbingdon Berkshire (abt 1869), between 1877 and 1881 the children were born in Bermondsey, in abt 1883 Hackbridge Surrey. By 1891 the family were resident in Frome, Somerset which is where Richard died. The only Richard Tickner close to his age, I could find in 1841 was this family.
Ref: HO 107/1071/5 Parish of West Maulsey (that's how the ennumerator spells it!) William Tickner, 46, Ag Lab and then.. Ann 40, William 16, John 14, Peter 11, Thomas 9, Richard 8, Nancy 5, Elizabeth 3, Hannah 2 and Samuel 3 months. All were born in the county.
So, in short I'm looking for anything on Richard Tickner 1829 Godalming before 1871, please help!

Is there anything about his father on the marriage certificate?
It might be worth getting the birth certificate of his eldest child, also.

I'm afraid I haven't ordered his certificate yet, it's certainly on my list, I'm sure it's the right marriage because the name Stafford appears again as my GGrandfather's middle name. You're right about the eldest child, I really should order her birth certificate but I've so many others to order (I've made the mistake of doing my whole tree instead of just one line) and not much to spend. I'd be very gratefull if someone could look up either of these events in the respective records offices.

Hi Beetle, you already replied to my post, re Benjamin Tilt and were very helpful, I haven't chased up your tip yet, though it is certainly up there on my list of priorities. (I've got a bit bogged down on my Mother's side lately and have neglected this side of my tree- shame on me)

Richard can't be found 1851 or 1861 but I did find Martha Stafford
RG09 2447 11 15 with her parents James and Eliza in Lenton, Notts
I wonder whether Richard is somewhere up that way 1861?

Thanks Kerryb, sorry I didn't acknowledge your message, my cat collapsed and died that day, I've only just got my smile back.
I'm still not convinced the Richard Tickner aged 8 is my "Dickie", I know you shouldn't take the age too seriously, but he is too young. I'm wondering if maybe Richard went to Spain to study leatherdressing, though it's probably more likely he is mistranscribed, odd he should disappear from so many census' though! Nothing for it, I will have to order that marriage certificate.

Hi cad
Sorry to hear about your cat!
It might be worth contacting the Surrey Record Office and asking them for a check on Richard's baptism in Godalming.

Hi cad
He was a butcher and Martha was a Mender of Hoods. At least I think it says hoods, the first time I read it I thought it said Mender of Heads
