deciphering a certificate - Liverpool Clayton Square
« on: Monday 30 June 08 19:47 BST (UK) »

I'm going to try posting an image of the certificate discussed in this thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,312697.0.html and a bit in this thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,311477.0.html

I think it says 'union (something), back of Clayton Square, Liverpool'.

Can anybody work out / does anybody know what the 'something' is?! Do you think I'm right with the other bits too.

I'm pretty sure that's Union Tap (could have been at the back of the Union Hotel).

Hi

Makes sense.

I thought it said Union Tap, too, and up here, a Tap is used to describe and alehouse or bar.

Best wishes

Is it? Ah, okay - well that would make sense then Smiley

I had a good look at googlebooks and google in general, but I couldn't see that much about it.

I did find a great site with lots of parish records for lancashire though and got a couple of hits from that.

thanks for your help guys  Smiley

Tap is short for taproom or tap-room.

Thanks Ken - do you have any more info on what that would mean? Or is it pretty straightforward?

Originally a tap-room was a cool room at the back where large barrels of beers were kept. Beer was taken to the front in jugs as and when it was required. Later it could mean just a room at the back, or even the whole place could be called the "xxx Taproom". It is just a word associated with public houses.

The Union Hotel is marked on the 1848-64 plan of Liverpool (Hanover St) available from Alan Godfrey Maps. Clayton Lane ran at the back of the Union Hotel.

Hi Ken

Thank you!  Now I know properly what it means too.  I love learning how these thins came to be, and it makes it easier to remember too.

Best wishes
