Hi TSB
You really need to put your kind offer into Lancashire Resources.
If it is left in this forum it will drop off the page in a couple of weeks, with the amount of postings it gets.
Ask a mod to move it for you.
Regards Ken

Hi, I have a query I have a marriage certificate dated 1846 for one William Howarth. His father George Howarth has " Policeman " given as his profession..I have only found 1 George Howarth that possibly matches , but his profession is given as " Railway gate keeper ".. On the certificate the area is Chorlton upon Medlock..It seems to be outside your dates of reference but would be grateful for any info you may have. Thanks Cuxwold

Hi Cuxwold
I know that in the early days of the railway, crossing keepers and signalmen were known as Policemen

Hi Simon, Thanks for that info, it does confirm what I had suspected , that they used the term " policeman " to cover a whole host of " security " type jobs. Someone else had mentioned this may have been the case. Thanks Cuxwold

Hi Simon could you see if there is anything on William Kitchen....I know he was based at Cliviger during his service but may have served elsewhere.
Thanks
Ady

Hello Ady Just in case tsb does not come up with anyone for Manchester , there are four William KITCHENs listed on the Lancashire Police Records Search .The dates they have put on their website range from 1840 to 1899 for the various officers . There is a William KITCHEN listed as serving in Burnley Constabulary between 1887 and 1899 . I believe Cliviger is in the Burnley area . Don't know whether that fits ? I have used this website for an ancestor serving between 1840 and 1845 . I paid £10 for a copy of his original appointment record stating description , family and postings . It was well worth it for me as it helped me understand why some of his children were born out of Manchester . Eric
