Hi All I'm still chasing these elusive Waltons. I have obtained a birth certificate for Blanche Mary Walton dated 22nd February 1873. Sadly the writing is deplorable and at the moment I'm unable to decipher the street name. However it does verify that her father George Walton was a publican in Richmond Victoria at this time.
Tetlow compiled a list of Victorian Publicans- this list is held in the Vic state library. I was wondering whether anyone has access to this list, and if so whether they might be kind enough to look up George Walton so that I might obtain a clearer picture of exactly where the hotel was and when he was publican. Always assuming that he was actually the publican and not just managing the establishment.
Many thanks Wren

Here you are
http://gateway.slv.vic.gov.au:40060/ >Genealogy Indexes > Tetlow index
If you give me the name of the hotel then I can check some of my Sands & MacDougall's directories.
He would have to have been the licensee to be on the index.
Cheers cando

Hi Cando Thanks, sadly, I've hit a brick wall. He's not there. I also checked under wife's maiden name not there. They must have been managing for someone else. Oh well. I'll just keep chipping away. Thanks again. Wren.

Hi Cando I'm not sure of the name of the hotel. Thats why I was searching under his name. I thought maybe I might get lucky. It was simply a long shot and a family story, until I obtained the birth cert to verify his occupation.
The story goes that George and his wife Amelia owned a hotel in Victoria. They were fairly wealthy and had maids and a nanny. When the nanny was carrying one of their children down stairs she dropped the baby and it became disabled.
This fitted perfectly with my knowledge of Blanche- their daughter, who was in fact disabled according to my great grandfather.
The story then goes on to suggest that Amelia's sister who was very religious came to visit and convinced George and Amelia to sell the hotel as the accident was a judgement on their evil ways. Thus they went into business with the sister (whose name I am not entirely certain of, although I suspect it was Mary Jane) and of course they went bankrupt. Amelia who came from gentry couldn't cope with being poor and died in 1884, leaving George to bring up seven children. Heart disease at the age of 39 years.
A long and involved story that seems and I emphasise the seems to fit with dates and what I know. I've had a little look at bankruptcy records and found nothing. I do know that Amelia's family were involved with the law in London for several generations. Have checked Uk census records. So yes, they seem to have been wealthy.
The writing on the actual birth cert is almost indecipherable. Although it does give the street name you' d have to be an expert in hieroglyphics to work it out.
Thanks for your help Wren

Wren do you know when they were meant to have sold the hotel. I have the Sands and MacDougall directory for 1870 and 1875 and all the hotels and owners/licensee are listed in the trade directory...but there are pages of them...

Hi Cando No I don't. I'm really just shooting in the dark at this stage. Trying to verify or disprove theories. I have an open mind, as to what's truth and what's embroidered fiction. The cert proves they had a hotel in 1873 but thats about it unfortunately. I do know that they were out of it by 1884 when Amelia died but thats all. Thanks Wren

Wren in the 1870 & 1875 Sands and MacDougall directories there is only one entry in each directory for a George WALTON living at 27 Young Street, Fitzroy.

Thanks Cando I just love it when information, really muddies the waters. This is probably him. I'll just keep searching. At some stage before 1884 they went to Morwell as that's where they were when Amelia died. George later moved to NSW where he lived at Harden dying in 1914. He seemed to have never owned anything and was simply a part time farmer and a bit of dreamer from what I can tell.
Thank you again for all of your help. Regards Wren
