Are we talking Lostock between Horwich and Deane, or Lostock Hall west of Bamber Bridge?

Hi Andrew you little Gem...

Got the connection.. a Charles Jones married an Elizabeth Woodfine Preston 1890..

An Elizabeth Jones married a Jonathan Higham Preston 1918..

Emily Woodfine had her address as 10 King St in 1920 when she married, on her marriage cert her the registrar started writting Charles and then crossed the name out... seen as though Emily was born 1890 no birth reg found as yet.. Charles would be the only father she knew...

She has a brood of Jones siblings on the 1901 census happy days..

And thanks to you, did you go to records office or do you own these directories..

The books are at the Lancashire Record Office.

I try to get to the LRO on Tuesday evenings - they are open until 20:30, which gives me a few hours to dig stuff up.

I've ploughed through the directories before, looking for my own folk, so I knew what was there, and it only took a few minutes to check for your info.

Hi Andrew its Colette if you are going to records office again this is a long shot..i am trying to find a Bert Shuttleworth who was a Hospital worker maybe Porter.. hes named on his son George Shuttleworths Marriage cert 1933 who married in Liverpool.. George was born c1905 going by his age on Marriage cert..

His address was Litherland outside of Liverpool, i have checked the address and there was a Sam Wilbraham there so can't see a connection..

After checking births for a George Shuttleworth i found 3

1904 Burney
1905 Skipton
1906 Preston

Now this George had a sister named Bertha havent a clue what year she was born or where.. but found one Preston 1903.. as i say its a long shot..

And Bert could be Albert Hubert Herbert etc.. but if you have time could you check any 1920s directory for one whos a hospital worker.

If its too time consuming i totaly understand

Thanks Andrew

The closest match is:-

From Barrett's Directory of Preston & District, 1922:-
Shuttleworth Mr. Hubert, 31 Gt. Avenham street.

The same entry is in the 1926 edition, though the chap has disappeared by 1936.

Virtually every entry gives a trade or profession, so "Mr" obviously indicates a man of other means.

Hello Colette,

It might help to look at www.lancashirebmd.org.uk - some areas (Preston is one) now have the mother's maiden name indexed so that you can see if they might belong to the same family.
